The Box of Many Things in World of Warcraft offers many upgrades. But which are good? What should you skill? We’ll tell you.
The Tower Torghast of World of Warcraft has been significantly revised in the latest Patch 9.1. To bring a bit more “roguelike” into this mode, Blizzard has made numerous changes. One of them is a permanent progression system that grants you buffs or negates certain negative aspects of the tower: The Box of Many Things.
We explain how to unlock the Box, what benefits it offers you, and how to best spend your Tower Knowledge to avoid wasting anything.
What is the Box of Many Things? A new progression system for Torghast. Here you can unlock different bonuses that make your visits to the tower more enjoyable. These range from powerful buffs for your character, such as increased damage or stamina, to “blessings” that introduce new mechanics to the game or make it easier to achieve a high score in the tower.
How do you unlock the Box? Just visit any wing in Torghast (except the Twisted Corridors) on any difficulty. Already at level 1, you should find the intermediary “Ve’nish” fairly early, who has a quest for you. He wants you to bring the Box of Many Things to the rune smith.
Complete the quest and accept the follow-up quest to then place the Box at the rune smith. That’s it – from now on, you have access to a new “talent tree” that you can gradually unlock with the currency “Tower Knowledge”.
How do you get Tower Knowledge? You receive Tower Knowledge by completing various wings of Torghast. Depending on how well your rating is at the end of the run, you will receive varying amounts of Tower Knowledge.
There is a cap for Tower Knowledge that is expanded every week. In the first week, this cap is 180, and it increases in the following weeks. You can always catch up to the current cap – you don’t lose anything if you don’t play Torghast for one or two weeks.
The Box of Many Things – What should you skill?
There are several ways to approach the Box of Many Things. However, you need to keep in mind a few things:
Many talents have several ranks, but their costs vary. For example, for the bonus “Blessing of the Ancestors” at level 1, you only need to pay 20 Tower Knowledge, while at level 2, it already costs 80, and at level 3, it costs 200. Therefore, it makes sense to combine many bonuses in a weaker variation rather than fully upgrading one effect at the start.
This is how you should skill: The path we suggest assumes that you want to get all cosmetic rewards as early as possible and pick up strong effects as soon as they are available.

With that, you have unlocked the most important abilities. In the following weeks, you can choose the remaining talents according to your preferences; the most important ones you already have.
Don’t worry about “mistakes”: Generally, you can hardly make a truly serious mistake. In the end, you will have unlocked all bonuses, so any former slip-up will be irrelevant. So don’t worry if you’ve skilled something “wrong” out of curiosity – sooner or later, you would have bought the ability anyway.
Explanations of some talents
Not all talents in the Box of Many Things are entirely self-explanatory. Therefore, we have a few explanations about the individual traits and tell you how they can benefit you.
Blessing of the Ancestors: Depending on the level of advancement, you start with 1, 2, or 3 blessings in the tower. These are special effects that you should read before each run! They appear on the right in your powers overview. Blessings can be simple buffs, such as finding an extra Anima Cell at the end of each floor or reducing your damage taken by 10%.
There are also some absurd powers, like the ability to attack and kill the intermediaries. If you do that after you’ve bought from the intermediaries, they leave behind some Anima powers, Anima Cells, and potions!
The daily changing blessings are a real “game changer” – always pay attention to which blessing you currently have active.
Freed from Torment: The counterpart to the blessings are the torment effects that are active in Torghast. The higher the level, the more torment effects are active. Some torments are only weak, like a damage buff for all enemies when you fight more than 5 opponents at once. Other effects are significantly nastier. For example, you can be stunned for 3 seconds if your health drops below 40%. This can lead to an instant death.
“Freed from Torment” reduces the number of torment effects you suffer from, making every run much easier.
The Adamant Vault: This talent is essentially access to a bonus area in Torghast. The talent only comes into play at levels 9 and above. You need to achieve a “flawless run” – meaning you have to reach at least 200 points. That’s a 5-star rating. If you manage that, you can continue at the end of the run and enter “The Adamant Vault”. These are a few additional levels, mostly with cosmetic rewards.
If you want nothing to do with it, you don’t have to take this talent. However, for collectors, timely unlocking is almost mandatory.
