Do you want to upgrade your Onyx Ring in World of Warcraft to item level 424? We will show you how it works.
The small but fine centerpiece of Patch 10.0.7 in World of Warcraft is the Onyx Ring. You get it on your first visit to the Vault of Zskera and can then fill it with three different stones to create unique effects. However, the ring is “only” at level 411 – but you can upgrade it to item level 424.
This guide will show you how it works.
Summary:
- Collect 60x “Inactive Primal Fragment” from the Vault of Zskera or by dismantling stones.
- Have a jeweler create 6x “Unstable Elementium” via a crafting request.
- Apply the Unstable Elementium to your desired stones and put them back into the Onyx Ring.
The Onyx Ring – How to Upgrade the Ring to Item Level 424
How do you upgrade the Onyx Ring? Basically, you do not upgrade the ring directly, but the stones used. When these increase in item level, so does the ring.
To upgrade the individual stones, you need to collect 10 “Inactive Primal Fragments” each. Each stone can be upgraded 2x, from level 411 to level 424.
Or in other words: To fully upgrade a set of 3 stones, you need a total of 60x Inactive Primal Fragments, that is 3×2 upgrades.
How do you farm “Inactive Primal Fragments”? You can get Inactive Primal Fragments through several methods. On one hand, you can find them in the various chambers of the Vault of Zskera. You sometimes receive them from treasure chests or for solving small puzzles.
However, you can obtain the fragments much more reliably by dismantling unwanted primal stones. This can be done in Morqut after you have unlocked the jeweler’s crafting station there. This happens immediately after the quest that grants you the Onyx Ring.
Note that primal stones are not unique. You can receive the same one multiple times and can therefore dismantle stones that you do not need without hesitation. In case of doubt, they can always be farmed again.
The unstable primal fragments must then be converted into unstable elementium.
How do you farm unstable elementium? Unstable elementium can be crafted by a jeweler of your choice. Since the item is soulbound on pickup, you need to place a work order through the crafting consortium. This works like all other orders as well.
For each unstable elementium, you need:
- 10x Inactive Primal Fragment
- 25x Silken Gem Dust (can be bought cheaply in the AH)
Once you have the unstable elementium, you only need to apply it to the stone of your choice to raise the item level.
If the desired stone is already in your Onyx Ring, you first need to remove it from the socket. You can do this for free in Morqut at the jeweler’s station that you unlocked on your second visit to the Vault of Zskera.
Remember to reinsert the upgraded stones into the ring and, like all other rings, possibly enchant the ring as well.

How do I get the right stone? Generally, you get all primal stones when you kill rare enemies on the Forbidden Island or thoroughly explore the Vault of Zskera. If a stone is still missing that you really want, you can spend your primal fragments to buy stones. The vendor “Researcher Imareth” sells various stones that may contain your desired stone.
