Our author Jürgen has not been in Fortnite: Battle Royale for a few weeks. Now he is back and does not recognize Fortnite with the zombies from “Nightmares” anymore. What happened?
That’s why I was out of Fortnite: I haven’t been in Fortnite for the last few weeks. On one hand, there was the launch of Black Ops 4, which I had to follow for professional reasons.
And then there was somehow also a lack of interest in Fortnite. Doing the same thing over and over became too monotonous for me, and Black Ops 4 was a welcome change.
What is the new mode like? Nevertheless, I continued to write about Fortnite here, and the new zombie mode piqued my curiosity.
And the Disco Domination was something I hadn’t tried yet. So I booted up Fortnite again one late evening after my DSA round and jumped into the fray.
This is a completely different game!
What the hell happened to Fortnite? Already after a few rounds, it was clear to me: This is no longer the Fortnite I left three weeks ago.
The regular rounds were all gone (at least the regular team mode is back now), instead, there is now a wild hybrid mode of PvE and PvP where zombies can appear everywhere.
Jürgen, the zombies, and John Wick!
How was the zombie mode for me? After I hadn’t seen much of zombies in solo mode before someone shot me, I started a squad round with randoms. We landed in Tilted Towers and looted everything we could.
Finally zombies: While looting, I suddenly heard horrific moaning. A cube fragment had appeared in the middle of the city, and creepy purple undead came out!
My team and I let our weapons do the talking, and with every zombie that hit the ground, there was cool extra loot.
Oh no, a Wick! But the shooting attracted other players, and an enemy group flanked us. I wanted to go around them and ran into my arch-enemy: John Wick!
The carriers of this skin are now rare, but there was apparently still one.
I was already looking forward to shooting Wick from behind, but I missed. Several times! Shooting at mindless zombies had made me sloppy!
This, of course, Wick noticed, turned around, and gave me a few shots with the new firearm.
Death by Wick: Like his counterpart in the movie, Wick then strolled over to my helpless character and brutally shot her point-blank.
Ideal for casuals like me!
The new mode is fun! But this shameful defeat couldn’t stop me, and I started more rounds in the zombie mode. Because the mix of PvE and PvP was just my thing.
I had already enjoyed this in Blackout in Black Ops 4, as there I had thanks to a nice zombie my first kill.
For me as a casual player, it is simply a blast to occasionally:
- … blow away a zombie and have more success experiences.
- drive full speed through the zombie horde with the Quad Crasher!
- lure the zombies like in the PvE mode “Save the World” to traps and laugh maliciously as the stupid undead are taken apart.
- fall on an opposing team while they are currently battling a large boss zombie and then take the gold loot from the boss.
However, I also understand that some players who prefer to play Fortnite “seriously” are currently not having fun with Fortnite anymore. There is currently no regular mode outside of tournaments and the recently returned team mode, and the zombies can really be annoying, especially in the endgame.
But I enjoy it more this way!
The disco is awesome!
Even cooler than the zombies, I found the new mass combat mode Disco Domination. In it, large teams fight to conquer and hold five dance floors with their moves. That’s pretty crazy, but actually just a typical domination mode with dance emotes.
But Disco Domination has a special feature: You have respawns until the last phase.
I was initially skeptical, but it all worked wonderfully. As an enthusiastic but quite clumsy casual gamer, I often got shot quickly in Fortnite and rarely achieved successes.
With respawns, however, dying was not a big deal; I could immediately start with all my stuff again and just keep shooting like Rambo.
This way I also got a few kills and could easily complete the annoying and virtually impossible minigun challenge for me in the regular mode.
Fun shooting without worries: I had tons of ammunition thanks to the different loot rules and could just keep spraying fire at a horde of enemies. Kills came in quick succession because in Disco Domination everyone plays much more offensively and carelessly than usual. After all, you come back right away, and dying is not a big deal.
Black Ops 4 has tough competition: This makes Fortnite even faster and more dynamic. Just the way I always wanted it. And this, while I was just wanting to switch to Black Ops 4. But with these new game modes, Epic has managed to make Fortnite my favorite once again. It is currently just as much fun for me as on the first day.
Your opinion on the current Fortnite: But enough about me and my new enthusiasm for Fortnite. How do you find the gameplay right now? Are the new modes a joy for you, or do you get annoyed that you can’t play most of the regular modes or the 50vs50 mode right now?
