The current antagonist of World of Warcraft still has many secrets. Her origin will be explored in more detail in the next patch – with a cutscene.
In the current expansion The War Within, the overarching plot revolves around Xal’atath. The elf with an affinity for the void is a mystical figure whose story is quite complex and not all secrets have been revealed yet. The next patch will finally provide some clarity, as we will witness how she came to possess the dagger that later bears her name.
Spoiler alert: This article contains story details about the new story quests in patch 11.1.7.
What’s new in patch 11.1.7? With patch 11.1.7, World of Warcraft introduces “Lore-Walking.” Here, you will visit lorekeeper Cho and experience some mysteries from the history of Azeroth with him. You can experience the origin of the Lich King or the origins of Xal’atath.
In gameplay terms, this works by repeating a series of quests that already exist in the game. For example, the priest artifact quest line where you originally find Xal’atath or her “liberation” in Battle for Azeroth.
However, there will also be new quest lines that continue these stories, as in the case of Xal’atath.
What does the new quest line show? In the final step of the quest surrounding Xal’atath, we travel back in time to the era of the Black Empire. This is the time span when Azeroth was completely dominated by the Old Gods Y’Shaarj, C’thun, Yogg-Saron, and N’Zoth.
Xal’atath attacks Ny’alotha here, the empire of N’Zoth, and tries to conquer it, as she apparently has other plans than the Old Gods.
N’Zoth has all tentacles full defending against Xal’atath and even has to summon his brothers in the end to succeed.
The colleagues from wowhead have already deciphered the associated cinematic:
Xal’atath is trapped in the blade but optimistically sees herself as the long-term winner, as she literally has “eternity” to wait. As a little bonus, we learn that Xal’atath has whispered to N’Zoth and proposed a “pact” that would make him more powerful and successful than his brothers. A pact, which we know was fulfilled in Battle for Azeroth with the liberation of Xal’atath.
If you want to know more about the story of the current villain of World of Warcraft, we have prepared the full story of Xal’atath in an article. It can’t hurt to know what this beautiful (but very dead) elf lady has planned.
