In the current PTR build of World of Warcraft, data from the upcoming Patch 9.1 can already be found. This data includes new cosmetic items: proper glasses. Such accessories have been demanded by players for many years – now they are finally coming.
What kind of glasses are these? On the PTR for the upcoming Patch 9.1 for WoW, there are currently four new glasses available that player characters can try on. These include glasses with clear lenses, sunglasses, and even glasses with only half lenses (reading glasses):
- Hipster Sunglasses (‘Hipster Shades’)
- Half-Rim Reading Glasses (‘Half-Rim Reading Glasses’)
- Musician’s Sunglasses (‘Musician’s Shades’)
- Black Rimmed Spectacles (‘Black Rimmed Spectacles’)

Additionally, the data miners from wowhead found two more pairs of glasses that cannot currently be tried on (via wowhead). It is still unclear how these new glasses will be available. At the moment, the glasses can only be viewed via a script and are not yet in the collection (via reddit).
Why do players want them so badly? Glasses have been among the accessories that players have wanted for a long time. Many NPCs already wear glasses, such as Lord Godfrey from Cataclysm and the Undead Mage from Ozzy Osbourne:
The video is already 12 years old, and players have been wishing for proper glasses in WoW for just as long. Previously, however, the cosmetics were not available – only weird other variants that absolutely do not have the same effect.
With proper glasses, players are missing items with which they could create cooler outfits. For many, the polished lenses are an important detail to perfect their transmog. User Falerian1 on reddit says about this: ‘As someone who has been demanding this for years, I am really happy!’ (via reddit).
This purely cosmetic option is popular among many players. Previously, players had to change items and carry them accordingly for certain outfits. With transmog and the collection, that was eliminated, and players only had to collect templates.
Finally walk around in WoW as Ozzy Osbourne and Harry Potter
These glasses already exist: Those wanting to wear glasses so far must rely on the professions jewel crafting or engineering. The glasses there look completely different. They are either completely exaggerated sunglasses or technical gadgets.
Proper “glasses” can only currently be worn by NPCs. The only option that players have for something more “glasses-like” are monocles, and these are often tied to armor classes. Thus, not every player can wear them.
With the new glasses, it will finally be possible to recreate wacky outfits, such as that of Ozzy Osbourne (the wizard and singer), especially with the Musician’s Sunglasses, or even Harry Potter.
The appearance of the glasses fits, and as cosmetic items, all players can use them, regardless of the permitted armor class of their hero.
When will the new glasses be released? At the moment, the glasses are still on the PTR of Patch 9.1. When exactly this will come to the live servers, we cannot yet say. However, the testing will likely take a while. More details can be found in our news: Finally, Blizzard announces Patch 9.1, revealing rough plans
Alongside the new patch, the story of Shadowlands will continue, and some players fear that the direction taken is not good at all. They suspect that the antagonist Sylvanas Windrunner will once again not be truly defeated, but will appear as far too powerful for the players:
Some WoW players mock the new Patch 9.1 already, showing no interest in it
