The Horde is evil! At least, that’s how it feels for many players in the beta of WoW: Battle for Azeroth. Game Director Ion Hazzikostas addressed this statement in the last developer Q&A.
The conflict between Horde and Alliance has existed since a time before World of Warcraft in books and other games. In Battle for Azeroth, it will be a central theme of the story. For players, this means a greater connection to their own faction once again.
For the Horde, the Alliance is considered evil – and vice versa. Recently, however, more and more details have emerged that cast the Horde in a negative light. We have already speculated whether Sylvanas will become the cliché villain.
Fan worries about the Horde
This was reason enough for the player Pearbutter to ask a corresponding question during the last Q&A with the developers of World of Warcraft. He specifically refers to the intro quest of the beta of Battle for Azeroth.
In this, the Horde is portrayed as significantly darker than before – even from the perspective of Horde players. He worries whether the Horde might now actually become the “evil faction” that the Alliance has seen it as for a while.
Hazzikostas explains: There are only shades of gray
Ion Hazzikostas’ response to this can only be described as vague. He describes the Horde as a construct of too many facets to be summarized under a term like “good” or “evil”.
All the peoples of the faction represent something different, something unique. They all have their past, which makes the decisions of the peoples and the Horde appear in a different light – depending on the perspective from which they are viewed.
However, Azeroth is a world of gray, and has never been a world where there is only black and white. But both sides should be concerned about the development, and not just the Horde. When asked directly whether Sylvanas is making the Horde evil, he gives neither a yes nor a no.
