MeinMMO demon Cortyn is even excited about fishing in WoW: Dragonflight. Because Blizzard has really come up with many things.
Fishing is not exactly one of the most exciting activities in World of Warcraft – but it shouldn’t be. It is often a bit meditative and quite slows down the “rushing from dungeon to dungeon”. Many players fish for hours for various reasons. To find a little peace, to level up their fishing skill, to collect cooking materials, or to hope for particularly rare drops.
But in World of Warcraft Dragonflight, fishing has become many times better. Because there are numerous little things that you don’t see at first glance and for which you need to engage more intensely with the system. We would like to introduce you to some of the “hidden highlights”.
It is important to know that most of the new fishing features are related to the Tuskarr from Iskaara in one way or another. When you reach glory levels there, you often unlock new fishing features that primarily come into play in Dragonflight. These include:
- New fishing opportunities (ice fishing, highland fishing, lava fishing)
- A harpoon to catch “Oschis”
- Fishing nets that catch fish automatically for you
- Fish that replace materials like ores or herbs
- Bonus chests that contain fish and a lot of gold
Additionally, there is a handful of recipes that you can only obtain through the fishing system, as you can sometimes find bottles with recipes. If you don’t need them yourself, you can gift them or make gold in the auction house.
Fish that replace other professions
One of the coolest, somewhat lesser-known features of Dragonflight fishing is that you can replace other gathering professions to some extent with fishing. For example, my priestess is a tailor and jewel crafter (and that’s why she always has a very full inventory). This means that she normally depends on getting ores from other players for jewel crafting – which I would have to buy in the auction house.
But with Dragonflight, that is not necessary, because I can fish a certain type of fish (magma crusher) that can be panned just like ores. From that, you then get gemstones and other materials, even of quite high quality. This allowed me to raise my profession to skill level 90 without having to buy ores even once.
The downside is, of course, that you only get a fish approximately every 15 seconds while fishing, whereas you get significantly more from ore deposits. An experienced miner will earn significantly more ores in the same time.
However, the benefits should not be underestimated either. At the fishing events at lava lakes, I can stay in the same spot permanently and empty the repeatedly appearing schools of fish, so I don’t have to move at all. If you want to watch a series in the meantime, you can do that while fishing (especially thanks to the new “interact” button) much more relaxed than when flying through the world. The corresponding fish also tend to be of rarer (“blue”) quality, giving me relatively good gemstones quite often.
Tuskarr from Iskaara – Cool rewards and big gold gain
If you want to fish, you can’t get past the Tuskarr from Iskaara in Dragonflight. Therefore, it is worth participating regularly in soup cooking to gain reputation with the Tuskarr.
However, you can also simply fish for reputation with the faction – thus gaining a significant advantage.
As you increase the glory levels of the Tuskarr, you not only unlock nets and harpoons but can also upgrade these so that more fish are contained in the nets or that these nets fill faster.
The twist is that you can fish the necessary upgrade items from special fishing points – this is revealed in the description of the item.
You will indeed have to use the first items for upgrades, but all subsequent ones can be immediately exchanged for reputation!
Glory Level 27 – Wealth without end
It gets really interesting with the Tuskarr from glory level 27. From then on, you can find “Tuskarr Tackleboxes” in the game world. These are usually distributed in large quantities at a few places, so you find 10-15 boxes close together.
The boxes contain not only numerous fish and shells but also a lot of gray “vendor items”. Depending on the box, this has a value from 3 gold to 500 gold. On average, it’s about 220 gold.
If you are looking for a nice gain, you can simply farm these boxes at night and thus easily find several tens of thousands of gold in a short time while also reaping plenty of fish.
Oschis – Big fish and rare spawns
Last but not least, there are also the “Oschis” in Dragonflight. These are particularly fat fish that appear as actual mobs in the game world. Instead of simply fighting them, you should pull them ashore with a special harpoon (a kind of mini-game) to gain a chance at some bonus loot. This is also an interesting community project, as other players can assist with their harpoons.
Oschis always appear whenever you have looted an “ominous shell” – which usually happens while fishing. If you have received such a shell, you should not immediately continue fishing. If you wait, your character automatically uses the ability “Watch for Oschis”. If you are nearby deep water, an Oschi will appear that you can pull ashore with the harpoon.
For each 5 of the shells, you can then use them at certain fishing spots to summon a particularly large Oschi, for which several players with harpoons are required. Sometimes this particularly large Oschi is also a rare mob that not only drops really strong loot but also drops upgrade items for your harpoon.
Since Oschis can also drop “ominous shells”, such an infinite cycle of summonable rare mobs and large Oschis can occur with several players present, attracting more and more players.
I generally enjoy fishing in WoW while waiting for something else – but in Dragonflight, I also often go out for an hour just because it’s worth it and surprisingly fun. You should give it a try.
