Dragon riding is one of the highlights of the new WoW expansion Dragonflight. But when can you finally use it and how do you unlock dragon riding exactly? We at MeinMMO will tell you.
Where do you unlock dragon riding? The new feature is integrated into one of the main quests. You will learn dragon riding automatically by simply following the story of Dragonflight.
The quest fittingly bears the name “Dragon Riding” and you will receive it from Alexstrasza at the Ruby Life Pools in the first area “The Coast of Awakening”. Your task is to speak with Lord Andestrasz, who will then grant you the corresponding ability.
How long does it take to get there? If you follow the main quest quickly, you should have unlocked dragon riding within 45 to 120 minutes after entering the new area.

Dragon glyphs are important if you want to level up quickly
What happens after unlocking? After you have unlocked the first dragon, you will learn the functions of the dragon in subsequent quests. After that, you should start collecting dragon glyphs.
With these, you unlock new talents that make flying more enjoyable, such as a longer flight duration, speed boosts, or a vertical boost. All this helps you to level up to 70 faster.
The fastest way to find them is with the help of an addon, as we explained here: Finding dragon riding glyphs – Addon shows all locations on the map. However, you must keep in mind that while the addon shows the position on the map, the glyphs may sometimes be located on mountains or hovering in the air.
Additionally, you will receive a new dragon in each of the different level areas, in this order:
- Renewed Proto-Dragon
- Highland Dragon
- Cliffwind Dragon
- Windborn Velocidrake
Why is dragon riding so important? Riding on the dragon makes questing faster and is also required to reach certain locations in the new areas. Often, resources are located in places that cannot be reached on foot. Additionally, there are new gameplay elements like dragon races, which logically require you to have dragon riding.
Moreover, flying is incredibly fun and it is the only way to fly in the new areas at the beginning. The classic flying mounts are initially disabled.
