In World of Warcraft Dragonflight, there is plenty to do. Whether it’s dungeons, completing the seemingly endless questlines, or leveling your main professions. But one of the secondary professions has also received a lot of love in the latest expansion – fishing. In this guide, we want to explain the most important details about fishing and reveal what bonuses exist and why it’s worth engaging with this profession.
What is worthwhile about fishing in Dragonflight?
Fishing is boring and yields nothing? Not at all! Fishing offers more bonuses in Dragonflight than in all previous expansions. Here is a short list of all the useful benefits that fishing brings:
- Fish are ingredients for many strong buff foods and are therefore essential for many types of content.
- Fish can replace other profession materials, such as fish from lava lakes for probing or ice fish that can be allowed to rot to yield Raging Decay and Raging Frost.
- Fishing can yield some recipes not available from other sources that are highly sought after.
- Fishing can bring reputation items for the Tuskarr of Iskaara, allowing for quick achievement of high fame levels.
- A special mount, Otto the otter, can only be obtained by passionate fishermen.
- Fishers can summon special, rare enemies.
Learning fishing in Dragonflight
To increase your fishing skill in Dragonflight, you first need to learn the fishing ability for Dragonflight. Simply being able to fish traditionally is not enough; you need to specifically learn the fishing skill of the latest expansion.
There are many teachers for this, and you can find the first one directly on the coast of Awakening, at coordinates 81 / 31.
You can find more teachers in the capital Valdrakken or with the Tuskarr of Iskaara. Just ask a guard, and they will describe the way to you.
How to level up fishing in Dragonflight?
Leveling up your fishing skill works in Dragonflight exactly as it did in previous expansions: you simply need to fish. Cast your line, wait for the bobber to “wiggle,” and then click it to reel in your catch.
It doesn’t matter whether you are fishing in schools or just in open water. As long as you are fishing in waters on the dragon isles that can contain fish, your fishing skill will slowly increase.
However, be aware that leveling up your fishing skill can take quite a while. At the beginning, each catch gives you one skill point, but later you will need to catch 10, 20, or even more fish per skill point. There is no actual hurdle to this; you will inevitably slowly but surely reach a skill level of 100.
The skill affects the chance of how likely you are to catch fish rather than “junk” from waters and also increases the chance of special loot, such as coins or Ominous Shells.
What fishing gear is available?
Even though you don’t necessarily need equipment for fishing, investing in a better rod can be worthwhile. As soon as possible, you should place a “Khaz’goritanglerfriend” crafting order at an engineer and then equip that rod.
The Khaz’goriteanglerfriend not only increases your fishing skill by 15 points but also grants you up to 90 perception, giving you a chance to receive additional loot when fishing. Perception allows you to receive more than just a single item when finding special items – such as copper, silver, or gold coins.
Apart from a solid fishing rod, there is no other “mandatory gear”. However, over the years, there have been numerous items that can additionally influence your fishing skill. For instance, tailors can craft a hat that increases fishing ability, and at the fishing tournament in Stranglethorn Vale, you can earn shoes that also grant this bonus. Jewelers can also build small statues that increase the fishing skill of all nearby players for a few minutes.
However, keep in mind that fishing gear – apart from the rod itself – must be worn directly on the character and thus replaces your “real” gear. So if you are attacked while fishing, your combat ability is reduced. This can be fatal, especially in war mode.
However, all these enhancements are not really necessary. If you have a solid fishing rod, it is completely sufficient to get the maximum benefit from the fishing profession.
The Tuskarr of Iskaara
The Tuskarr of Iskaara are one of the main factions of Dragonflight and are closely associated with fishing. While you don’t necessarily have to fish to earn reputation here, many of their rewards provide bonuses for the fishing profession or unlock new activities.
Here is a brief overview of all the fishing unlocks available at different fame levels:
- Fame Level 4: You can now see “fishing holes” that change weekly. Here you can find particularly many or special fish, as well as daily quests. Additionally, nets can be cast here later.
- Fame Level 5: You can now cast nets at fishing holes and empty them after a few hours to receive fish without effort.
- Fame Level 6: You unlock “Highland Fishing” and can now find new schools of fish in elevated areas. The fish can be ground by scribes to obtain pigment.
- Fame Level 7: You unlock the construction of the harpoon needed to catch Oschis on land. These are particularly thick fish with special loot.
- Fame Level 10: You unlock “Ice Fishing”. After crafting a special axe, you can break ice at marked spots in the Azure Mountains. There you can fish for certain fish that you can “let rot” to yield meat, Raging Frost, and Raging Decay.
- Fame Level 13: You can upgrade your nets to receive more fish and shorten the waiting time for retrieving the nets.
- Fame Level 15: You unlock “Lava Fishing”. In some lava areas on the coast of Awakening, you can now fish for special fish that can be probed by jewelers to yield gems.
- Fame Level 18: You can improve your harpoon to pull Oschis on land faster and more efficiently.
- Fame Level 27: You can now see and loot bait boxes of the Tuskarr at waters. They contain fish, recipes, sellable junk, ominous shells, and almost all other common items you can obtain through fishing.
Note that you will need various upgrade items for all upgrades to your harpoon and fish nets. Talk to Tavio in Iskaara (13 / 49) and hover the mouse over the items. In the item description, it will always state where you can find them.
Special rewards from fishing
Apart from the various fish with their culinary and crafting properties, there is also a variety of special rewards that you can earn while fishing in Dragonflight.
Ominous Shells and Oschis
While fishing, you will occasionally pull an “Ominous Shell” out of the water. When this happens, do not immediately cast your line again, but instead wait. Your character will “search” for Oschis – these are particularly thick fish. Once an Oschi appears, use your harpoon (requires Iskaara fame 7) to reel in the Oschi.
You can use a total of 5 Ominous Shells at once to summon special enemies at fishing holes. Often these are “just” elite Oschis, but there may also be special rare mobs that drop equipment or upgrade items.
Keep in mind that you can pull Oschis in together. The more players attack an Oschi with harpoons, the easier it is to pull it out of the water.
Coins of the Islands
Even rarer, you will find different coins while fishing – copper, silver, or even gold coins. These count as currency and can be exchanged at “The Great Flunk” in the Plains of Ohn’ahra (82 / 73). Here you will receive bags of varying quality depending on which coins you trade in.
The bags contain toys, but also resources like elements or Darkmoon cards. It’s worth exchanging coins only from silver quality onward and trading copper coins instead for silver coins.
For a gold coin, you receive a bag that guaranteed contains a cool pair of sunglasses as a toy. You will need the glasses for a puzzle mount.
