Role players get a little highlight in World of Warcraft. They receive a place that is perfect for their favorite content.
Role players are a peculiar bunch in all MMORPGs. For their passion, they often need neither tough endgame content nor a good balance of character classes or constantly new content. Instead, RPers prefer a lot of cool transmog and beautiful places to engage in roleplay.
Whether it’s a large arena, a beautiful clearing in the woods, or a vast battlefield. The main thing is that there are no annoying mobs around, allowing for long emotes. A small wish is fulfilled for the role players with Dragonflight – as they finally get a tavern that has no annoying NPCs.
What are role players complaining about? Role players have longed for a housing feature for nearly two decades but have come to terms over the years to rely on other places in the game. Particularly inns and taverns are often used as “RP-hubs”, meeting points for role play. However, these inns are often filled with NPCs, so tables are occupied, leaving little room for RPers to express themselves freely. Truly empty spaces are a rarity – and that’s exactly where Dragonflight aims to help at least a bit.
You can watch the cinematic for Dragonflight here:
What’s in Dragonflight? As Twitter user Portergauge discovered in the beta of Dragonflight, there is a very special inn on the Dragon Isles called “Fallingwater Overlook.” To most players, this tavern is just a bar, like there are hundreds in WoW. But role players may have a special interest here because normally the bar is full of NPCs, but there is an option to nearly completely disable them to create an empty space for role play.
How does it work? Comparatively simple. You just need to buy a ticket from the NPC “Cadestrasz,” which allows you to use the “Fallingwater Overlook” for two hours. You will then be placed in a version of this location where no NPCs get in your way, making it primarily usable for role players – but normal guilds looking to hold a cozy guild meeting somewhere can also benefit from it.
Has there been something like this before? In a way, yes. In the Ardenweald of Shadowlands, there was a similar feature at the theater stage northwest of the Heart of the Forest. Even there, interested players could buy a “private ticket” to switch to an alternative version of the stage where there were no NPCs.
Although many liked the option, the location was only moderately used – mainly because most role players play living characters who are not the chosen “Maw Walkers” and therefore have no place in Ardenweald. The pure optics of the area also make it difficult to have the stage play out historically at another location.
Nevertheless, it is nice to see that Blizzard apparently wants to expand this feature to more places. As long as there is no housing, it is definitely nice to offer role players additional options. More of this, please.
What do you think about this? A cool idea to provide role players with more opportunities? Or unnecessary fluff that nobody uses anyway?
