With only a fraction of his abilities, a player leveled in World of Warcraft. Individual enemies were often a huge challenge.
In modern World of Warcraft, the game really only begins when you reach level 60. However, the path there is now quite fast, and thanks to different specializations, each class can level in several ways. Some players, however, find this not challenging enough – like this Death Knight, who forgot the most important thing when leveling.
What happened? The Death Knight Basard showed a screenshot in the WoW subreddit where you can see his character at level 60. As character description, it only says “Death Knight”. There should actually be a more precise specialization, such as “Blood Death Knight” or “Frost Death Knight”.
This means Basard completed the entire leveling phase from level 8 onward (Death Knights start at this level) without a specialization.
How is this possible? Since the overhaul of the leveling phase, characters at level 10 are no longer automatically assigned a specialization. Although WoW repeatedly reminds players through pop-ups that they should choose a specialization and spend talent points, there is no compulsion to do so. If someone simply never chooses a specialization, they can basically play the game without it.
Why is this so difficult? When a character in WoW does not choose a specialization, they only have access to a very small part of the abilities – namely all the “neutral” skills that are not tied to a specialization. But even these neutral abilities are usually particularly weak, as they are not enhanced by talents and passive effects of the specializations.
What were the particular hardships? In the comments below the screenshot, the player Basard details some of the unique problems facing the “spec-less” Death Knight:
- Rune Strike scales with level but has no AoE function – not even when used in Death and Decay. This makes it very hard to deal damage to multiple enemies.
- The base Death Knight has no diseases to spread – thus much of the damage is lost.
- The “Mastery” stat simply does not exist for the character. If no specialization is chosen, this stat has no use and is not even shown in the character window.
- A main strategy of Basard was to look for undead enemies he could subjugate to fight as his companions so he wouldn’t die so quickly.
How are players reacting: In the WoW subreddit, the achievement is being recognized. There were over 5,000 upvotes and numerous awards for it, but some players are calling for the Death Knight to go even further. Here are some of the comments and demands:
- “You get an award from me if you sign up for Mythic+ and pretend you have no idea what a specialization is.”
- “The sheer willpower to endure the ‘You have new talents to choose from’ message is unreal. Respect.”
- “You talentless spinner! ♥”
What do you think of this achievement? A cool thing and very resilient? Or a complete waste of time?
