Currently, the upcoming Patch 9.0.1 is being tested on the PTR of World of Warcraft. This is the major pre-patch for the Shadowlands expansion. What’s going on? Anyone playing on the PTR right now might be a bit surprised. Some characters have apparently also been caught off-guard by the current heatwave and have completely slathered their bodies with sunscreen. It’s hard to explain otherwise why there are character models currently reflecting so much.

This especially applies to Lightforged Draenei, Nightborne, and Zandalari trolls. If you strip them down to their underwear or at least expose parts of their skin, they have massive light reflections all over their bodies.
On the PTR right now Lightforged Draeneis appear to be very oily in the character creator from r/wow
Community is quite amused: Players in the WoW subreddit find this bug extremely entertaining. There are repeated comparisons with Asian MMORPGs, in which female characters often run around with such a look. Comments include:
- “I knew they were bringing back weapon oils. But this is too much.”
- “Ah, so that’s what ray tracing was for.”
- “Now the bodies just need to jiggle in the right places, and we have Blade&Soul.”
Where does the bug come from? This is not yet clearly explained. However, since Patch 9.0.1 also improves the graphics of World of Warcraft a bit, there are some innovations in the character models as well. The bug seems to occur with all races that have reflective tattoos – namely the Allied Races Nightborne, Zandalari trolls, and Lightforged Draenei.
This will likely be fixed by the release of Shadowlands. Otherwise, some players might wonder if World of Warcraft has copied too much from certain Asian games…
