A brave dwarf defeats the current raid boss “Rygelon” in World of Warcraft – and does so solo. This feat takes a total of 5 hours.
Raid bosses in World of Warcraft are among the most challenging content that Blizzard’s MMORPG has to offer. Usually, they are designed for groups of more than 10 characters and thus require tanks, healers, and damage dealers – but not always. The dwarf monk “Vennbrew” has demonstrated that it is possible to solo a boss as a tank if one is very, very patient.
What were the difficulties? The fight against Rygelon, the penultimate boss from the current raid “Mausoleum of the First”, has a series of mechanics that actually require the attention of multiple players. Primarily, the quasars that appear every few seconds must be killed quickly. If one of these adds reaches the boss, it deals extremely high damage that is hard to heal.
Vennbrew circumvents this problem by kiting the boss continuously and never letting the quasars come to him. Only when the boss stands still to cast does the dwarf group the quasars together and defeat them with area attacks before they can join forces with the boss.
You can see the video of the kill here: Extremely shortened, condensed to 10 minutes:
Why were there only auto-attacks? The reason Vennbrew can only use automatic attacks against Rygelon after the fourth “Mighty Bang” is that the fight is technically over at that point. Normally, the fourth “Mighty Bang” signifies the soft enrage. If the bang hasn’t killed everything yet, Rygelon begins to cast “Radiant Plasma” relentlessly. This causes very high group damage every few seconds and wipes out the last survivors – or so one would think.
However, the monk can survive this. In fact, Rygelon becomes untargetable during this phase, but if one perfectly times the expiration of a debuff, it remains possible to attack the boss with automatic attacks – and nothing else.
In other words: After the fourth Mighty Bang, Vennbrew has no choice but to rely on automatic attacks. After the first 6 minutes of the fight, only auto-attacks remain.
This ultimately leads to an extremely long kill time of 5 hours and 8 minutes.
How is that even possible? Basically, the new talents play a significant role in allowing the monk to stay alive for so long. Without the new talent system from Dragonflight, this would be almost impossible, as many strong talents provide the Brewmaster monk with more survivability and massively increase his self-healing.
Vennbrew thus joins the ranks of remarkable achievements, as Rextroy has already accomplished.
What do you think about it? A cool and impressive achievement? Or a clear case of “monks are totally OP”?
