In less than an hour, Blackwing Lair in WoW Classic was already cleared. Why did it go so fast?
For almost a week now, the “Phase 3” of World of Warcraft Classic has officially begun, which brought the opening of Blackwing Lair (BWL). However, the “new” raid could not provide a challenge for long.
What happened? Only 42 minutes after the launch of Phase 3 and the opening of Blackwing Lair, Nefarian was defeated. The kills went to the European guilds Calamity and Progress – both defeated Nefarian at the exact same second, so not even Blizzard can determine a clear winner in this race.
Why did it end so quickly? The answer to the question is more or less obvious. Unlike new raids in modern WoW, the raids from WoW Classic have all been known for well over a decade. There are very few mechanics, and they are usually not particularly complex.
Moreover, the guilds have been able to prepare for the raid over the past weeks and months. One of the biggest hurdles back then was the Onyxia Scale Cloak. This is an item that every player needed in the raid to withstand certain attacks from boss enemies.
Since the cloak was made from scales of the dragon Onyxia , the preparation took a long time. After all, you can only defeat Onyxia a few times a week and take her scales. Thanks to the long lead time, most raid groups are likely fully equipped with the cloak.
In addition, many of the players had also practiced a lot on private servers in recent years, so the last decent BWL raid is not that far in the past.
Will it stay that fast? It can be expected that the next raids like Zul’Gurub and Ahn’Qiraj will also be cleared at a similar pace. These raids were visited by many players back then and should not pose a major challenge for players who have equipped themselves well from Blackwing Lair.
Only Naxxramas could still pose a hurdle for some guilds. The boss fights there were only played by a few guilds during the Vanilla period and were considered – for that time – quite difficult. Surely there will be a few guilds who will “rush through” quickly, but a large part of the players will likely take longer here.
