The Season of Mastery in World of Warcraft Classic is coming to an end. Blizzard is shutting down the servers – we reveal what will happen to your characters.
A very special version of World of Warcraft will soon be leaving us forever. Blizzard has announced that the “Season of Mastery” is coming to an end, and thus the associated realms will be shut down. In the future, it will no longer be possible to play the Season of Mastery in WoW Classic. But don’t worry: You can save your characters to other realms.
What was the Season of Mastery? The Season of Mastery was something like a “WoW Classic+” – that is, the “old” World of Warcraft with some adjustments. For example, there was a faster leveling phase, but raid bosses were significantly more difficult, and the especially powerful world buffs could not even be taken into raids. Everything was a bit more tailored to the modern WoW while not completely losing sight of the classic WoW experience.
However, it was clear from the beginning that this is a “season” – only a temporary affair. Exactly this ending is now in sight.
Until when can you still play? You have a few months left. Blizzard has announced that the “Season of Mastery” realms will no longer be available for play “on or after February 14, 2023.” You can still access the character selection, but the “enter world” button is grayed out – the game world can no longer be accessed.
So, just in time for Valentine’s Day, it will be time to find a new gaming love to fill the void that the “Season of Mastery” will surely leave for some.
What happens to the characters? Your Season of Mastery characters will still be retained after February 14. You can transfer them for free to another realm with the same rules (Normal or PvP). You can choose whether you want to go to a “Classic Era” realm or one from Wrath of the Lich King Classic.
The free transfers have been available for a few days now. You can take advantage of them immediately to “save” your characters to another realm.
However, Blizzard has already announced that the characters will not be kept forever. If you don’t want to find out one day in surprise that your season characters have completely disappeared, you should make use of the character transfer within the next few months.
Fortunately, there are still other WoW variants – whether Classic or Dragonflight.
