Gathering resources for Ahn’Qiraj was a huge event in World of Warcraft. In Classic, the fun was short-lived – sometimes even less than 24 hours.
The opening of the Ahn’Qiraj raid is arguably the largest and most well-known event in World of Warcraft Classic. Thousands of players work together on their respective realms to advance the war effort, gather donations, and then strike the gong that opens the gate. An effort that typically takes weeks. However, the initial steps of this event were completed in no time – on the very first day.
What happened? Last Wednesday, the big event surrounding Ahn’Qiraj started in WoW Classic. Every realm needs to gather tens of thousands of resources to initiate the opening of the gates. This is a task that usually takes several weeks, thus giving all players an opportunity to participate. After all, there are many reputation points to gain with the various factions of Horde and Alliance.

But in Classic, the excitement was over quickly. The realm Sulfuras had gathered all necessary resources in just 14 hours and was able to complete the first phase of the event. The guild <GRIZZLY FROM REDDIT> alone contributed nearly 98% of the resources and had collected them beforehand.
On other realms, it’s similar; in many cases, the war efforts have already been completed.
Big guilds did most of the work
Why was it so fast? The war efforts and especially the gathering of resources were so quick mainly for two reasons.
- More efficiency: Players are generally more efficient now than they were back in the Vanilla days. Large guilds had gathered most resources before the event began and could hand them in right at the start.
- More players: A Classic realm hosts more players than a realm did during the Vanilla days. With the increased player count, there are also more people to gather resources and submit them.
The resources were mainly stored in mailboxes – they wouldn’t fit in the usual character banks.
Thus, the event met expectations, that it would be over super quickly.
What’s next? The event is still ongoing, but preparations for the next steps are already underway. The guild <APES> was even able to complete the necessary step of farming Scarab Lord fragments within 23 hours. This is part of the quest line to later strike the gong and finally open the gates of Ahn’Qiraj.
The event will likely be fully completed only next week, as the necessary quest item can be obtained from one of the older raids.
If you want to be there for the actual opening, you’d better hurry. Because with a little bad luck, Blizzard might exclude you from it…
Did you also donate resources? Or was the fun gone way too quickly on your realm?
