WoW Classic: Survey shows that you are not in agreement about changes

The player base in WoW Classic is divided. No changes to the game, or much more of them? You decided and here is the result.

A few days ago, we asked you about the current opinion regarding World of Warcraft Classic. We wanted to know if you are satisfied with the changes Blizzard made to Classic (compared to the original “Vanilla” over 15 years ago). Even though one group received a lot of votes, it is clear that opinions vary widely.

18% think Blizzard is overdoing it

A solid 18% of participants stated that they disagree with Blizzard’s changes. In their opinion, the developers have already changed too much about Classic. With the adjustments made over the past weeks and months, it simply is no longer the original that was anticipated for so long. For them, premade PvP queues are already a break from the “original” state of the game.

The majority is satisfied with the current level of changes

The largest group – a proud 46% of participants – agrees with Blizzard’s changes and finds the current level of adjustments correct. For World of Warcraft Classic to work today, a few changes are indeed necessary. Recent adjustments in PvP were made to prevent trolling.

For instance, Florian Gottfried writes on Facebook:

The changes were simply necessary. The mentality of players has changed over 15 years. Blizzard has adapted the Classic of back then to the community of today.
The core game hasn’t been changed per se, you still run from 1-60 on foot, you still prepare in a city for the next quests with water, food, ammunition, and possibly reagents for professions. You still need a group for certain quests.
All changes are there to bring the game up to date after 15 years.

This comment aligns with the perspective of the largest group of players. To keep the intended gameplay of WoW Classic in a healthy state, a few changes are necessary, and so far Blizzard has done everything right.

For me, these are largely bitterly necessary adjustments that simply have to be made to avoid frustration. The argument that Blizzard would eventually patch Classic too much towards Retail is completely absurd. First, I don’t have the impression that they are doing more for Classic than the bare minimum and merely skimming the surface, second, they would only face effort that may not even be appreciated in the end. Why would they do that?

Over a third wants even more changes

With 37%, more than a third of you want Blizzard to make further changes and adapt WoW Classic more drastically to modern times. There are many bugs and exploits in the gameplay that should have been recognized as exploits back then and should certainly be resolved today. Especially the spawn of a certain flower is criticized by many and should be changed.

However, there are also calls for more convenience features, such as the ability to switch between different specializations quickly and inexpensively.

Some of the “Quality of Life” improvements from Retail WoW have indeed left a lasting impression on players, so they do not want to miss these now.

Conclusion – Blizzard can hardly please everyone

Our survey confirmed what many had already suspected. Views on what constitutes an authentic Classic experience vary widely. For some players, the feeling of the original was already lost when it became clear that Classic realms could house more players than was the case back then. Other players support changes that lead to preserving the gameplay style of back then, whether because PvP battles are fairer or because exploits that were hardly known back then cannot be used on a large scale anymore today.

The player base has very different expectations from Classic and this makes it difficult for Blizzard to satisfy everyone. But at least it must be said: the largest group is currently quite satisfied. Apparently, WoW Classic is on a pretty good track.
