Nostalrius is moving and is now called Elysium. But is everything the same as before? What will Blizzard do about the Classic WoW server?
The closure of the private server Nostalrius has caused anger and frustration among many fans of classic World of Warcraft, as it was the only way to play WoW Classic in its original form. After a series of discussions between the Nostalrius team and Blizzard, communication broke down, prompting Nostalrius to threaten Blizzard more or less: Talk about Classic servers at BlizzCon or we’ll make the code available.
Said and done. In the meantime, the code has been handed over to Elysium, another Classic server, which has now integrated it and thus founded “Nostalrius 2.0”. Former players can even access their old characters again. The project is apparently progressing well, as they have just completed the second “stress test”. They plan to launch with 3 servers in December.
The whole thing is certainly not entirely legal, which is why they are now also operating the servers in countries where legal actions are more difficult, so that Blizzard cannot come in “friendly with the lawyers”. But will they let that go?
Cortyn states: I still side with Blizzard in this matter and believe that as developers they have the sole right to decide what happens with the game and previous versions. This is certainly not a pleasant prospect for everyone wishing for classic WoW, but in my view, it is not within the decision-making power of former players and hobby developers.
It certainly is not helpful that Blizzard has been silent on this topic in recent months, further upsetting disappointed fans – however, this does not change the fact that it is their game. I can hardly imagine that Blizzard will just let this slide – though it has not set a good sign for possible “negotiations” on either side.
Which side are you on and why?
The drama around the soft cap of legendaries in World of Warcraft is also causing major discussions.
