The layering in WoW: Classic will soon be turned off. But the problems have been piling up in recent days. Can this work?
In World of Warcraft Classic, “Phase 1” is rapidly coming to an end. Phase 2 is set to begin next week on November 12, bringing new content. This includes world bosses like Lord Kazzak or Azuregos, but for PvP fans, especially the Honor system. With this, layering will also be turned off – and here a huge problem is currently brewing.
Layering will be turned off: Currently, the “layers” are still active on the fullest servers. This means that there are multiple versions of the game world that players are divided across. However, with the start of Phase 2, this system will be permanently turned off on all realms. Then all players would be in the same world, which will be even more densely populated.
Mass PvP virtually unplayable: On many realms, there are already massive battles in PvP, even though the Honor system is not yet active. Feedback has been rather negative there. Server lag becomes unbearable with more than 80 players, and on many realms, there are even such significant delays that seemingly nothing happens for minutes.
A good example is shown in this video:
Much criticism on Reddit: In the WoW: Classic subreddit, there are currently several posts daily complaining about the problems in PvP. Some report that the delays occur even when players gather in completely different locations. For instance, when several hundred players are present in Stormwind, it can lead to problems in all areas struggling with lag.
But one can also have fun on Classic realms in other ways…
Whether Blizzard has an acceptable solution for this and will tweak server technology in the coming weeks or months remains to be seen.
Some players argue with a bit of humor and say: Mass PvP has always been full of lag. Back then, it was due to bad PCs, and today it is simulated by Blizzard’s poor servers. So, it’s basically the same as back then.
What is your opinion on the matter? Should Phase 2 start, no matter how chaotic it will be? Or should Blizzard improve the servers first to guarantee a certain performance?
