WoW Classic has significantly improved the subscription numbers of World of Warcraft. And it seems that it remains popular.
It has been known for several months that World of Warcraft Classic has had a great impact on the subscription numbers of WoW. After all, it has provided WoW with more new subscriptions than ever before. However, it seems that the hype around Classic was not just a short-lived phenomenon but has kept many players tied to the old Azeroth for a longer time. At least that can be concluded from Blizzard’s quarterly report.
What was said? The current financial report from Activision Blizzard specifically addresses the two versions of World of Warcraft. J. Allen Brack stated:
Due to the content updates for modern WoW and the rhythm we have for Classic, we ended the year with a number of subscribers that was double what it was at the end of Q2. We also see that players remain active in both versions of the game.

Later he added that the ongoing participation in Classic is particularly high in the East.
Numbers should be questioned: Despite the good news, one should take these numbers with caution. While WoW had twice as many subscribers at the end of 2019 as in mid-2019, that looks good on paper. However, mid-2019 was also one of the “low phases” of WoW: Battle for Azeroth, which is why the subscription numbers could have been particularly low then.
The “double amount” sounds good in principle, but without knowing exactly which number was doubled, one should exercise a bit of caution.
Of course, this does not change the fact that a basic doubling of subscriptions is a very good thing for WoW.
Classic still has problems: Although subscription numbers for World of Warcraft were high at the end of December, WoW Classic is still facing some specific problems. In addition to the ongoing battle against PvP bots, players notice that the server economy has shifted due to many players per realm.
For example, there is too little Black Lotus on the realms, forcing raid players to pay huge sums for buff potions or simply forgo them altogether.
However, so far these problems seem to have little impact on interest in Classic. It will be interesting once all Classic content has been released and how Blizzard reacts then. After the release of Naxxramas, Classic will fundamentally be “over” and will no longer offer new content.
