In WoW Classic there is currently the “most glorious” drama unfolding that one can imagine. The opening of Ahn’Qiraj is to blame – or is it just the players?
In World of Warcraft Classic, a rather heated phase is currently active. Presently, the event for the opening of the gates of Ahn’Qiraj is taking place on all realms. The first step, gathering war resources, has ended quite quickly on many servers. But players are now struggling with the other steps. This has led to plenty of fine “WoW drama” that players probably haven’t seen in years.
What is the problem? With the opening of the gates of Ahn’Qiraj comes a very special mount, the black Qiraji mount. However, only a limited number of players per realm can receive it. These are the players who complete the quest line for the scepter and thus ring the gong at the gates – they have 10 hours to do so, after which the mount is forever lost. This is associated with a lot of farming work and requires the efforts of the entire guild. There are plenty of opportunities for things to go wrong or for players to troll each other.
What kind of drama is happening in WoW Classic?
The drama is currently coming in several forms, here are some of the current “highlights” from the ongoing issues.
Mass reports to eliminate competition
Things are equally “funny” on the realm Sulfuras, as Jpo- writes on reddit. There, players of the Alliance have repeatedly tried to interfere in boss fights to prevent the completion of the quest line, which often succeeded.
When the guilds of the Horde then cooperated to kill the boss with 200 characters despite the griefing attempts, the Alliance switched their strategy. They simply reported one of the guild leaders pursuing the quest line through the reporting system. So many reports came in at once that the guild leader was automatically banned from the game – for a whopping 7 days. That is way too long to have any chance at the special mount.
While exploiting the reporting function is punishable, it is questionable whether Blizzard can react in time in such cases.
Agreements between Horde and Alliance
Many players on various realms report that the Alliance and Horde apparently cooperate. This also seems to be an “open secret”. For example, some Alliance guilds pay players of the Horde to patrol in Silithus and repeatedly kill other Alliance players.
In Silithus, a large grind needs to be completed, targeting several thousand bugs. To hinder other players in farming, the large guilds are now sending “assassins” from the other faction against their competitors.
False bans for ambitious players
Recently, there have been a whole lot of temporary bans on players who allegedly used bots or hacks. It seems that numerous players, who played honestly, were again affected, and in some cases could confirm this well with screenshots, streams, or conversations with guild members. Most of these were players who still wanted to gather resources for the collection of Ahn’Qiraj.
Apart from these major incidents, there is, of course, still a lot of “small drama”. Some guilds are losing their guild leader because he believes that his guild members are not farming enough for him (via reddit).
In summary, the opening of Ahn’Qiraj is causing a lot of drama once again. And all of this for a black insect mount from a game that is over 15 years old.
What do you think of the behavior of those involved? Did you see something like this coming?
Fortunately, there are also some nice stories in WoW right now, such as the hunter who leveled “completely wrong”.
