A suspected group has attacked the servers of WoW Classic with a DDoS attack. Many players were not happy about this at all, and Blizzard even less so. Now a suspect has been apprehended by law enforcement.
What kind of attack was that? Over the weekend of September 7, there were some DDoS attacks on the US servers of WoW Classic. Nothing worked there, players could not play at all, the servers were practically completely blocked.
Since the attack happened right during prime time, many players were extremely annoyed. They could not understand what could be gained from such an attack, but sometimes even blamed Blizzard and demanded compensation.
A group called “UkDrillas” is accused, which is said to have previously carried out attacks against Wikipedia and Twitch.
Even in Germany, something of the attack was felt. Around the same time, which is between midnight and 6:00 AM for us, there were problems with the servers. During this time, there was significantly less activity here.
This is what has happened now: In a new post in the official forums, Blizzard stated that the security team has worked with international authorities to identify the attackers.
It seems that this has also worked. In the announcement, Blizzard explained that at least one suspect has been found and arrested. However, it still needs to be clarified whether this is actually a guilty attacker.
Penalties against players in WoW Classic
This is how hard Blizzard is cracking down: In 2018, a Romanian executed a DDoS attack on the servers of World of Warcraft. This attacker also ended up in jail and even had to pay a fine.
However, not only attackers in real life feel the justice. Blizzard is also going against cheaters, exploiters, and scammers in the game. Recently, several players have taken advantage of an exploit, that allowed raid bosses to be farmed.
Here too, Blizzard did not take long to react. Penalties were imposed shortly after, in the form of bans that range from 30 days to permanent:
