The latest raid in WoW Classic was a brief pleasure. The final boss endured only a fraction of the time he survived nearly 15 years ago.
Since yesterday, the gates to the raid Ahn’Qiraj in World of Warcraft Classic have opened on several realms. In addition to a lot of drama surrounding the Scarab Lords and even a realm completely opposing a guild, there has also been the race for the first kill. After all, the Old God C’Thun awaits enemies at the end of the raid – although not for long. Within just a few minutes, the giant eye had to give in.
What happened? After the 10-hour event to open Ahn’Qiraj, the raid “Temple of Ahn’Qiraj” was finally accessible. The first guilds were eagerly waiting and immediately dove into the raid. However, Ahn’Qiraj did not represent a major challenge anymore. After only 49 minutes, the guild Progress had arrived at the final boss and had extinguished his life lights. They had skipped all optional bosses and approached them only afterwards.

Back then, the run on C’Thun was an undertaking that lasted more than 100 days.
Why was it so fast? There are several reasons for this. On the one hand, the raid is very well known after almost 15 years, and every player knows what to do. On the other hand, many players today play more effectively and focused than back then. Many groups fully utilize the powerful world buffs that grant characters many additional hit points, critical hit rating, or simply more damage.
Why did C’Thun survive so long back then? In 2006, when Ahn’Qiraj was first released, C’Thun lived significantly longer. It took a solid 113 days until C’Thun was defeated for the first time by the guild Nihilum. The reason for this was that C’Thun was simply unbeatable until the day of his first kill. Developers could even mathematically prove that it was simply impossible to defeat the Old God. When this was recognized by Blizzard, a nerf quickly followed – just a few hours later, C’Thun fell for the first time.
In WoW Classic, C’Thun can be found directly in his nerfed and thus beatable form. However, the fact that he passed away in less than an hour was still surprising.
Ragnaros had a similar fate, by the way. The Fire Lord even died against a group that hadn’t even fully reached level 60…
But let’s just wait for Naxxramas. Because already now – once again – the voices are getting loud that the real difficulty would only begin with the next raid…
