The goal for WoW: Classic is clear. But the fans are divided. Is patch 1.12 in its pure form really the best solution for “Vanilla” WoW?
A few days ago, the development team of World of Warcraft: Classic took the time to talk about the development of WoW: Classic in “Coffee with the Devs.” Some important details were revealed, such as the patch level that WoW Classic intends to use. We have already discussed that here:
New technology, but no new features
The developers have made it clear with the post what players can expect from World of Warcraft: Classic in the future: an authentic “Classic” experience, with the new server structure as a basis. As a result, WoW: Classic benefits from integrations into Battle.net and modern anti-cheat mechanisms. At the same time, a clear rejection of “newer features” was communicated. Features such as pet battles, the dungeon browser (and thus the raid finder), or achievements will not exist in WoW: Classic. All improvements seem to be limited to the technology in the background.
Relief on one side
A large part of the players feel relieved by the announcement. They wished for an “untainted” Classic without new convenience features and are apparently going to get it. From their point of view, they are happy that Blizzard has not given in to the “pampered newcomers.” They look forward to some aspects that they feel have been lost in the current World of Warcraft: Legion:
- Unity among players, more social interaction
- Friendliness towards each other, as one has a reputation to lose on the server
- The feeling of a large world, where one is just an adventurer and not a great commander
Disappointment and criticism on the other
Another part of the potential player base feels deterred by the announcement and predicts that WoW: Classic is already one foot in the grave. They point to a series of arguments as to why Classic in its pure form would no longer work today:
- With the extensive knowledge available on the internet, the magic of the unknown is lost
- The content can be completed in a few weeks, as what was “hard” back then is simple for many today – bosses often had only one or two mechanics back then
- Many players today no longer have the time to farm for a high PvP rank or to collect gold for an epic mount over weeks
But how do you see the whole thing? Do you think it’s good that Classic is appearing in “untainted” form with patch 1.12?
There is still no release date for Classic. However, it is suspected that Classic will probably not be released this year, as the state was only recently determined on which the developers want to see WoW.
