A small note from Chris Metzen clarified: The greatest threat from World of Warcraft no longer exists. Everyone is gone.
When considering what the greatest threat in World of Warcraft is, one quickly enters a competition of superlatives. The first might still say “Arthas!”, the next “The Burning Legion!” But sooner or later we end up with the Void Lords. These are the most feared creatures in the cosmos. At least, they used to be. Because Chris Metzen just dropped: There are no more Void Lords.
What are Void Lords? The cosmos of World of Warcraft consists of several dimensional planes. There is not only Azeroth but also a dimensional plane of demon magic (the Nether), a dimensional plane of death (the Shadowlands), and also a dimensional plane of the Void. There in the Void, the Void Lords have previously roamed. They are considered incredibly powerful, hungry beings that wanted to devour basically everything. Until now, the Void Lords had no way to directly access Azeroth, so they used the Old Gods as their envoys. In patch 11.2, there was then for the first time a battle against Dimensius, one of the most powerful Void Lords. But that was likely the last battle of this kind.
The last Void Lord is defeated – where are the others?
What did Chris Metzen say? World of Warcraft released a “Deep Dive” on YouTube a few hours ago. The video is mainly about the game systems and the story of Midnight. However, it was introduced by Chris Metzen, the story guru behind WoW, who summarizes the events of The War Within and the current antagonist Xal’atath. After all, Xal’atath has control over the power of Dimensius, after we sealed it for her in the Heart of Darkness.
But Chris Metzen chooses his words carefully and reveals an important detail, as he says:
“And recently, Xal’atath has seized the power of the last Void Lord, Dimensius.”
Yes, you read that right. Chris Metzen spoke of the “last” Void Lord. With that, he practically mentioned “in passing” that there are no other Void Lords anymore. The great cosmic threat posed by the Void Lords practically no longer exists.
Where have the Void Lords gone? Although Metzen does not say it precisely, one can piece together what has happened to the Void Lords. For the Void devours, and that applies to all creatures of the Void.
It stands to reason that the Void Lords devoured each other until only Dimensius was left. After all, we partially learn this in the battle against Dimensius – there he summons two “lesser” Void Lords that he has already devoured over the course of his life.
For many in the community, it came as a surprise that the Void – aside from Xal’atath – has thus disappeared as a cosmic opponent. Because apart from Dimensius, who is sealed in the Heart of Darkness, there are no other Void Lords left. But who knows if that will change again. Perhaps we will learn more about it in the upcoming expansion Midnight.
