World of Warcraft managed to reach the top on Twitch thanks to a particularly exciting “World First” race.
Despite being a pretty old game at 15 years, World of Warcraft consistently captivates hundreds of thousands of viewers on Twitch. This was proven yesterday as the MMO giant briefly topped the Twitch charts. World of Warcraft had the most viewers simultaneously on the streaming platform at one point.
What was the reason? Yesterday, World of Warcraft hosted the “Finale” of the “World First” race. It’s a race among the most successful guilds in the world (like Method, Limit, Exorsus, or Aversion). The goal is to defeat a new boss on the highest difficulty for the first time worldwide. This apparently entices both old and current WoW fans to watch the race on Twitch and cheer on the raiders.
Since Blizzard doesn’t want to, the guilds are doing it themselves: There has been consistent criticism from the major guilds over the years that Blizzard does not support the “World First Race” at all. There’s no official tournament like there is for “Mythic +,” and the starting conditions are not particularly fair. American players start half a day before Europeans, and they, in turn, start quite a while before Asians. Equal conditions look different.
The guilds have therefore taken the “marketing” of the race into their own hands. While Method hosted its own stream, Limit teamed up with Red Bull to follow the race.
Nevertheless, the “World First Race” for Queen Azshara has once again proven that World of Warcraft can still captivate audiences – even if only for a few large moments.
