An old battlefield from World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King is being renewed. Soon there will be war in Northrend!
In an interview at BlizzCon with the French site Mamytwink, Jeremy Feasel and Tina Wang from Blizzard talked about some details of the future of World of Warcraft. A long-time fan favorite is returning – the battlefield “Wintergrasp”.
What is Wintergrasp? Wintergrasp was an “Open World” battlefield during the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. While one faction controlled a fortress, the other faction could capture workshops and build vehicles to tear down and conquer the fortress.
The battlefield was quite popular at the time but also important for PvE players, as only those who controlled Wintergrasp could enter the Chamber of Archavon, a “mini-raid” that dropped very good loot with little effort – for both PvE and PvP players.
In the PvP rotation, Wintergrasp logically will not grant access to the raid and will instead be added as an epic battlefield to the other battlegrounds.
What is an “epic battlefield”? Epic battlegrounds are a separate group of battlegrounds that players can select through the PvP menu. They are larger and typically last longer than the regular battlegrounds like Arathi Basin and Warsong Gulch.
Currently, the only epic battlegrounds are Alterac Valley and Isle of Conquest. For the longer duration of the battlefield, there are also greater rewards – more honor and more often a reward chest, even in defeat.
When will Wintergrasp be released? When exactly Wintergrasp will be reintroduced as an epic battlefield is still unknown, although Feasel stated that it will “be soon” – for Patch 8.1 Tides of Vengeance, it seems too late.
However, they want to gather sufficient feedback from the community and possibly revise some aspects of the gameplay.
A possible date would be Patch 8.2 – as Nazjatar and the Eternal Palace as a raid will also come.
There is really only one question left: Will Wintergrasp in its new version finally have “exciting air battles”, as was promised on the packaging of Wrath of the Lich King? We will probably know that in a few months.
