Possible Traitors
There are a number of notable characters whose clock is ticking until they succumb to madness or finally pursue their own selfish goals. These characters are currently still seen as “good” or “neutral” toward the Horde and/or Alliance, but story developments already hint that this will not last forever.
Bolvar Fordragon, the Lich King
After Arthas’s death, the Exiled Bolvar Fordragon took Ner’zhul’s helmet and became the new Lich King. He keeps the Scourge in check and prevents them from running amok – at least, that’s what he tells everyone.
Last seen: In the Death Knight campaign, Bolvar named the Death Knights “his champion” and allows him to act as his executor. The Lich King is gaining power, and the size of his army is still countless.
Where he might appear: In any expansion. The influence of the Scourge is huge, and the remnants of the Cult of the Damned could resurface anywhere to reveal a new plan of the Lich King. It is also suspected that, thanks to Ner’zhul’s helmet, three spirits are now sitting on the Frost Throne: Ner’zhul, Arthas, and Bolvar.
Jaina Proudmoore
Jaina Proudmoore is a mage of the Kirin Tor and was long the love of Arthas (and also Kael’thas). She has experienced much betrayal, survived several attempts on her life, and has increasingly been overwhelmed by hatred and disdain in recent years.
Last seen: At the beginning of “Legion,” she leaves the Kirin Tor when the council decides to allow the Horde into the city. Where she has disappeared to is uncertain – she did not visibly participate in the battles against the Legion.
Where she might appear: In an “Island” expansion that also includes her homeland, the islands of Kul Tiras. She has probably fled back to her people. Fans around the world are waiting for her to be finally unmasked as a dreadlord – a running gag that perhaps contains more truth than one might suspect.
Sylvanas Windrunner
Sylvanas is the Banshee Queen and former ranger general of Silvermoon. During Warcraft 3, she broke free from the Scourge and established her own people, the undead Forsaken. Since then, she has joined the Horde, but in this alliance, she is almost exclusively working on one plan: to increase her own population. During Legion, she was made Warchief of the Horde.
Last seen: While trying to create new Val’kyr, she was stopped in Stormheim by Genn Greymane. Otherwise, her efforts in the fight against the Legion are rather sparse; she leaves most of the fighting to the other races of the Horde.
Where she might appear: In any expansion. Sylvanas’ plot has taken on significantly darker tones since Cataclysm, and for her as well, it is only a matter of time before the bottle finally overflows, and she decides to eliminate everyone who stands in her way.
Wrathion
He calls himself the “Last Black Dragon” or “The Black Prince” and is the son of Deathwing, who triggered the Cataclysm. Like all black dragons before him, he has directed many events in the world and has repeatedly seduced players to grant him more and more power. In his visions, he saw a “great battle that will overshadow everything else” and apparently did not mean the Legion.
Last seen: Wrathion was last seen during the “Legendary” ring quest in Warlords of Draenor, where he eavesdropped on players forging the ring.
Where he might appear: Everywhere. Since there are at least two other black dragons (Ebonhorn and Sabellian), he definitely has two names left on his list to cross off before no one can contest his place.
