In Battle for Azeroth, many aspects of World of Warcraft are altered by the war. Blizzard is already preparing the game on the test server. However, Uther’s tomb has also been renovated – which is (still) not a battleground. This raises the question: Why?
Uther’s tomb, the Lightbringer, is being revamped: In the current build of the beta for Battle for Azeroth, Uther’s tomb has received a major overhaul. It is getting new textures and more details.
The tomb of the paladin is located in the Eastern Plaguelands – the place where he was slain by his former student, Arthas Menethil. The tomb has existed since WoW: Classic and received increased attention during Legion when paladins had to visit it for some quests.
The tomb could play a bigger role
The discussions about the renovation of the tomb are heated. Under the post in which a Reddit user pointed out the changes, there is a lively debate about the significance. Two assumptions stand out particularly.
The story of the Lich King could continue: One theory is that the tomb will be important for the story in Battle for Azeroth. Uther was slain by Arthas as he was becoming the Lich King and is a significant figure in his story.
Uther warned players in Wrath of the Lich King that there must always be a Lich King – Arthas could not simply be slain. Thus, the idea of Bolvar Fordragon as the new Lich King came into play. Part of Bolvar’s family is introduced in Battle for Azeroth.
The Battle for Andorhal as a war front: In Battle for Azeroth, war fronts are introduced, conflicts between the Horde and Alliance across Azeroth. These are strategically important positions that are coveted by both factions.
Andorhal could become one of these positions. After the Alliance liberated Undercity, it would make sense for them to further free Lordaeron. The Horde would have a strong interest in holding the Plaguelands as a defensive line.
Both possibilities have their appeal and could explain the preparation of Uther’s tomb. However, it could also just be Blizzard’s love for history that should not be forgotten.
What do you think? Will Andorhal become a battleground, or will the Lich King return? Will Uther’s tomb play a role or is it just the care of the past? Leave us a comment!
