When was World of Warcraft at its best? You voted – here are the results!
With its particularly long lifespan, World of Warcraft has not only survived a long time in its “Classic” state but has also endured 7 expansions. A few days ago, we wanted to know from you when WoW was the most fun and when it was “the best WoW.” Many of you participated in the voting and now we have looked at the results. They are clear.
Rank 1: Wrath of the Lich King
For a large part of our readers, the golden age of World of Warcraft was the expansion Wrath of the Lich King. With 41% of all votes, WoW’s second expansion secured a comfortable first place. There are many reasons for the significant lead. WotLK was the spiritual successor to “Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne” and told the ending of Arthas’s story. At the same time, there are many cool raid memories, such as Ulduar and the Icecrown Citadel. Lastly, there were also the cool zones, like the beautiful Grizzly Hills, whose music still evokes nostalgic feelings today. “Wrath of the Lich King” was a well-rounded addon with great quest areas and solid endgame – the kind that fans didn’t even know they wanted at release.
Rank 2: The Burning Crusade
The first expansion is the best – right? At least that’s what 25% of the players likely thought, who elevated The Burning Crusade to a secure second place. For the first time in a long time, players could enter an unknown world and discover new secrets. Flying mounts, stories around Kael’thas, Illidan, and Vashj, the Burning Legion, and one of the most feared raids of its time, the Sunwell Plateau, remain in the memory of many players. And who doesn’t get a pleasant shiver down their spine when they hear the peaceful howl of a felhound, who in the next moment is already trampling their character into the dust?
Rank 3: Legion
The current expansion is doing well with fans despite not yet enjoying the “nostalgia bonus” of past addons. 12% of all players consider Legion to be the best state WoW has ever reached. Meaningful mechanics, such as “Mythic+” dungeons, world quests, extensive class campaigns, and the design of artifact weapons ensure that Legion has a secure third place.
Classic “only” in 4th place
The classic World of Warcraft, which many players long for and which ultimately even led to the announcement of the “Classic” servers, ranked 4th in our survey. 10% of the votes went to Classic. The other addons are far behind – especially Warlords of Draenor hardly convinced:

- Cataclysm (4%)
- Warlords of Draenor (1%)
