Rank 6: Mage and Warlock

What makes Mages special? Mages are a ranged class that, like Rogues, has only damage specializations. They are considered a beginner-friendly class for players who want to try their hand at ranged attacks.
With their spells, Mages are usually found somewhere among the top DPS in WoW’s DPS list with at least one of their specializations. They also bring useful abilities like increasing the spell power of the group and providing food and drinks.
The specializations of the Mage
- Fire: Fire Mages are particularly strong in fights with multiple targets to which they can spread their “Ignite” debuff. However, this spreads automatically, so they don’t need to pay attention to it but may inadvertently attack enemies that should not take damage.
- Frost: Unlike Fire Mages, Frost Mages deal damage with single-target spells or a few targets around the main target. In addition to their high DPS, they have the ability to constantly slow down or otherwise control enemies.
- Arcane: Arcane Mages use their mana more as a resource than the other specializations and have an incredibly strong burst damage. However, they constantly fall back in the DPS list during Battle for Azeroth due to their heavy reliance on rotations, which are often interrupted by mechanics in raids and dungeons.
What makes Warlocks special? Just like Mages, Warlocks are ranged DPS that exist solely for damage. They also cast spells, but instead of arcane forces, they attack with demonic powers.
Warlocks have the ability to support their group with healing health stones and a soul stone that can revive a player in battle. They are also popular for their portals.
The specializations of the Warlock
- Affliction: Affliction Warlocks excel in single-target damage and have weaker but shorter damage cooldowns. They are a “pet” class that relies heavily on their summoned demons and are therefore more mobile since movements are possible while demons attack.
- Destruction: The Destruction specialization is particularly suitable for fighting exactly two targets or when another target must take a lot of damage in a short time. Their spell “Devastation” reflects all single-target spells onto a second target at a slightly reduced percentage.
- Demonology: Demonology Warlocks work with damage-over-time spells and distribute them well across multiple targets. They can fight single and multiple targets with strong spells but need time for their damage to reach its full potential.
