Additional content in Burning Crusade Classic comes with steep prices. The community is still debating whether this is just “cheeky” or downright greedy.
Yesterday, the developers of WoW Classic revealed that BC Classic is actually launching on June 1st (or June 2nd for us). Along with this revelation, they also disclosed the costs for the Deluxe Edition and additional services such as character cloning. The player base seems to agree on the salty prices: They are cheeky, greedy, and absolutely inappropriate.
What happened? Various versions and services of Burning Crusade Classic were unveiled yesterday. Essentially, you only need a subscription to play, but there are a number of optional services and offerings that require real money:
- Deluxe Edition: The Deluxe Edition includes 30 days of game time, a character boost, and some toys for a hefty $70.
- The character copy, if you want to continue playing a character in both Classic and BC Classic, costs a hefty $35.
As expected, the community reacted mostly negatively.
How players are reacting: Among the various news regarding the price announcement, there are many players reacting in disbelief. Comments include (via reddit):
- “There are crazy illusions. And then there’s Blizzard.”
- “What we wanted: Classic+ What we got: TBC$”
- “Let’s summarize this. $70: 2 mounts (1 in BC, 1 in Retail), 2 toys, 30 days of game time, a character boost to 58: And now let’s say I want to copy my Warlock, I’d pay $105. What the hell.”
Players are particularly upset because the high cost of character cloning could further divide the community. Many players will be deterred by the high price and may not want to invest $35 to continue playing a character on a Classic realm.
A famous WoW streamer complains: Among the big WoW streamers, the prices are also hotly debated, with a generally unanimous opinion. Asmongold referred to the prices on Twitter as “freaking ridiculous” and sees it as a “shame”.
However, there are also a few voices that have fewer problems with the prices, although this is only read sporadically. After all, the purchases are optional and most will only play BC and not linger in Classic anymore. You are not forced to buy.
The vast majority of players who respond in forums or on the subreddit, however, are more negatively inclined.
Cortyn says: Anyone who follows me and my articles knows that I concluded with WoW Classic some time ago. I still log in occasionally for RP or a dungeon, but that happens rather rarely.
I was looking forward to Burning Crusade Classic, as, like many others, I have fond memories of late-night gaming and chaotic adventures in the Shadow Labyrinth.
For me, it was clear that I wanted my human mage on both a Classic realm and a BC realm. But I am not willing to pay the price for a character copy. This is a service that finds use hundreds of thousands of times when participating in a beta or PTR test in WoW. To put it bluntly, this just involves copying a file from A to B. To charge $35 (probably €30) for that is simply outrageous.
Or what do you think?
