With the launch of Burning Crusade, WoW Classic is experiencing a new hype on Twitch. Although this time it is not as big as in 2019, when Classic first launched, it still gives the game a top trend and some streamers a lot of viewers.
This is how BC Classic is performing on Twitch: Currently, World of Warcraft is in 7th place among the most-watched games on Twitch (via sullygnome.com; the Just Chatting category is ignored). This means the MMORPG is even ahead of the perennial favorites Fortnite and CS:GO.
In the trends, WoW is even in 1st place, making it currently the game with the greatest growth potential on the streaming platform. Compared to before the release of Burning Crusade, WoW has climbed several places in the ranking.
Overall, over 17.3 million hours were watched in the past week, with an average of 103,002 viewers tuning in. The biggest streamer is Asmongold, with nearly 3 million total viewer hours. In 2nd place, sodapoppin, barely reaches around one million hours.
Asmongold attracted nearly 130,000 simultaneous viewers on the release night on June 2nd – that’s three times his usual average (via sullygnome.com).
BC Classic Strong on Twitch, but Classic Was Stronger
How strong was Classic? The original version of WoW Classic from August 2019 achieved even better numbers and made World of Warcraft the most-watched game on Twitch with Asmongold as its cursed king.
The largest WoW streamer had over 263,000 players at peak – more than double compared to BC Classic now.
Is Burning Crusade weaker? The data offers little to no insights as to why viewers are less interested in Burning Crusade than in WoW Classic. However, it seems plausible that the fascination of novelty has simply worn off.
Burning Crusade builds upon the hype of Classic, which was already there. There isn’t much new to see. It is also noticeable that interest in WoW is generally declining at the moment. Cortyn from MeinMMO even has a rather gloomy outlook for the current addon Shadowlands:
Is BC Classic worth it? WoW fans who did not play Burning Crusade at its initial release 14 years ago should definitely catch up. The game feeling of Classic is entirely different and BC does some things better than WoW Classic before.
Even brand new players can rediscover how MMORPGs used to work with BC Classic and why millions of players still swear allegiance to World of Warcraft. Soon on MeinMMO, you can also read why BC Classic captivates our author Benedict Grothaus much more than it actually should.
