Our survey on the popularity of WoW: Battle for Azeroth showed – the game fared worse than we thought.
That Battle for Azeroth was not exactly the most popular expansion of World of Warcraft is no big news. However, how unpopular the game actually is comes as a surprise. A few days ago, we asked you how much you actually like BfA and you participated eagerly in the survey. Therefore, we can now present you with the results.
Only 1 in 7 players is satisfied with the addon
Let’s start with the positive news. About 1 in 7 perceives Battle for Azeroth as a good addon. Because the voting shows:
- 12% found Battle for Azeroth “pretty good”.
- 2% even consider Battle for Azeroth to be “great and the best expansion so far”.
The game world or the cinematics, which were strongly represented this time, are often praised and have enriched the story. The expansion of the “Mythic+” dungeons is also occasionally mentioned as a positive point.

The story was very interesting, especially regarding Saurfang and Sylvanas. I still love the Warbringer videos to this day. Overall, a solid addon and I am looking forward to the next one.
Or as Patrick Sanfteil writes on Facebook:
I found it mediocre. They did many things right in Legion, which somehow got lost in BfA. Good ideas were put forward, but the implementation was not good.
In summary, the disappointing result remains that only 14% of our readers are satisfied with Battle for Azeroth, while 43% look back with mixed feelings and another 43% harshly criticize the expansion.

I think it’s great. There’s a lot of grind towards the end, but that’s well known. I don’t even know how that could be changed. But I’m really looking forward to Shadowlands. 🙂
Great dissatisfaction – 43% found Battle for Azeroth bad
However, the (narrow) majority of the votes consider Battle for Azeroth to be a bad expansion that has lost a lot of trust. Repeatedly mentioned criticisms include the unsatisfactory ending, the weak new features, or the constant grind seen as a necessity for many contents.
- 24% believe that the expansion was “pretty bad”.
- 19% even view Battle for Azeroth as “a disaster and the worst expansion so far”.
In the comments, Ectheltawar summarizes well:
For me, BfA was truly by far the worst expansion that WoW has experienced. There was no truly major new feature at all. Most was rather a revision of things we already had in the game. The island expeditions sounded fun in theory, but in practice, they didn’t really “spark”. The new war fronts weren’t really different either; I didn’t really consider them a major new feature that enriched the game with something truly new.
The worst part for me was the story and its progression. (…) With BfA, Blizzard managed to portray both factions as unplayable for me.
Robin Thomson on Facebook also shares this impression:
Very, very disappointing. They got so much right in Legion, which they took away or made worse in BfA. I hope Shadowlands will be better.
A large part sees good and bad in Battle for Azeroth
Nearly as large as the group of players who can’t find anything in Battle for Azeroth, is the group of people who see both good and bad in Battle for Azeroth. These 43% criticize in most cases the ending of the expansion, which came a bit too quickly and particularly used up the Old God N’Zoth too hastily.

It was okay. Azerite gear was boring at first, but since it has 5 rings and more spec-specific traits, it’s quite okay. The classes were a disaster at first since many rotations relied on the artifact weapon, which then got completely removed. Some abilities (e.g. Fury and Affliction) were really cool, while other classes got to keep their artifact ability…
But from 8.2 on, the addon became really good in my opinion.
