Blizzard’s lead developer reveals why Argus from WoW patch 7.3 will not be its own expansion. Furthermore, Legion could end with patch 7.3.
The Game Director of World of Warcraft, Ion Hazzikostas, was interviewed in the “Cox ‘n Crendor” format of the YouTube channel Jesse Cox, addressing several questions about patches 7.2 and 7.3.
The discussion heavily revolved around Argus, the “new” planet in World of Warcraft where the Legion is fought in patch 7.3. Many fans hoped that Argus could be a standalone addon, but it will “only” be the content of patch 7.3.
Argus is simply a world that has already been ravaged by the Burning Legion for millennia. Now it is just a “destroyed shell” and would therefore be quite monotonous if an expansion were to take place only in this barren landscape. There are no major civilizations left in the world with which to interact, and even a change of scenery would not be possible.
Generally, Argus is an important location, especially for the Draenei. It is therefore possible that players might return later in the storyline. However, for the context of Legion, this will be a one-time visit dealt with in patch 7.3.
Patch 7.3 is likely the last major patch of Legion
Interestingly, patch 7.3 will likely actually be the last major patch of World of Warcraft: Legion. At least, Hazzikostas’s statement suggests this, as he began a sentence with “Argus is actually the last …” then corrected himself and referred to it as the “culmination” of the battle against the Legion. However, this would perfectly align with the speculation that the next expansion will be revealed at BlizzCon 2017.
What do you think about the decision to make Argus “only” a single endgame zone?
