Data miners have found hints about a new mount species in the files of World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth. The new mounts could fulfill a long-standing wish of the community.
This was discovered: The data miners from wowhead have found sound files in the game files, all stored in a directory called “Alpacas.” They apparently belong to the fluffy quadrupeds.
The sound files can, according to the data miners, be linked to some encrypted files that indicate a creature model for mounts. The colleagues from Vanion have already expressed the suspicion that alpacas could come as a race mount for the Vulpera as a possible allied race of the Horde.
Alpaca Mounts: A Long-held Wish Comes True
Players have been wishing for alpacas for so long: The calls for mounts in the form of wool camels have been around for many years. Posts demanding alpaca mounts have appeared in the official World of Warcraft forums as early as July 2011.
Since then, there have been repeated demands for the fur-laden creatures as mounts, and it is quite possible that the wish had also been expressed on other platforms before.
Why are alpacas so popular? The main reason for the demand for alpacas is likely that many players simply find them cute. Since Battle for Azeroth, there have been alpaca NPCs roaming in the Vol’dun area.
The new alpaca models from Battle for Azeroth have also captured the community, as shortly after the leaks, threads on Reddit emerged where users demanded alpacas:

However, alpacas also served for a time as a kind of meme in Mists of Pandaria. After the introduction of Pandaren as a new race, jokes about alpacas being the “new overlords” in the next expansion became more common.
How do I get alpacas? It is still unknown if and how these new alpacas will find their way into the game. However, the encryption of the game files suggests two possibilities:
- They are supposed to remain secret for future content
- They will be implemented as purchasable mounts in the shop
At least the shop option is already “feared” by some users, after the latest purchasable mount has already divided the community.
