There are major story changes in Patch 8.1 of World of Warcraft. Blizzard is implementing the feedback from the “Red Shirt Guy” almost 1:1!
The upcoming Patch 8.1 Tides of Vengeance from World of Warcraft has been the center of many discussions long before its release. Especially lore enthusiasts like the “Red Shirt Guy” found the story surrounding Tyrande and her transformation into the Night Warrior absurd, poorly written, and poorly executed.
Apparently, Blizzard is listening, has taken the criticism to heart, and improved the scenes at Darkshore. Here, Tyrande transforms into the powerful “Night Warrior” through a ritual, while the Forsaken aim to recruit some Night Elves as undead.
Tyrande is not a queen: In some dialogues, other Elves referred to Tyrande as “Queen” – although Tyrande despises this title, which she has made clear repeatedly over the past few years. This has been changed; now they all only refer to her as “Tyrande” – except for Plaguebringer, who aims to mock her.
A bloody battle: While Tyrande becomes the Night Warrior, the player and NPCs protect her ritual. This is now significantly bloodier, as many more Horde characters attack. The player does not win but is threatened to lose. One is almost overrun by the Horde before the ritual is completed, leading to the (still unknown) cutscene.
No mercy means no mercy: A major criticism was that after her transformation, Tyrande says that “the time for mercy is over” – only to shortly freeze a camp of undead. This scene has been changed. Tyrande now destroys all undead in the camp except for one – and that one is left behind to deliver her message.
Exciting final battle: Another downside was the superiority of Nathanos Blightcaller, who was not intimidated by the “new” Tyrande. In the updated version, he actually fights for his life, is severely wounded by Tyrande, and survives because Brynja sacrifices herself. The revivals of the two Night Elves still succeed.
All these changes are essentially suggestions that the “Red Shirt Guy” brought up or were proposed by the community.
It seems that the player protests on Reddit and in the official forums have made a difference.
However, there is also the possibility that Blizzard had planned some of these changes anyway – after all, the yet-to-be-shown cutscenes must have been completed long ago, and they need to fit the storyline.
Cortyn says: I think it’s great that Blizzard reacts to feedback and removes major story blunders from the game. Now the storyline at Darkshore makes much more sense and feels much more cohesive than before. However, these changes also leave a bad taste and raise two questions:
- Did Blizzard not know better at first?
- Should players decide how the story of WoW should look?
I’m not sure if I like that the story progression is now being “dictated” by the community. As long as it is just a one-time case, I can probably live with it.
