Who is Dagran Thaurissan II., Monte Gazlowe or Xal’atath? We reveal everything about the important characters from WoW: The War Within.
The next expansion of World of Warcraft will start in just a few weeks. The War Within also marks the beginning of a new saga, as the next three expansions will tell a connected story about the world soul of Azeroth.
This brings many characters back to the stage who had previously been missing for a while or whom you may never have heard of before. We will introduce you to some of these characters in more detail, so you know exactly what roles they play in The War Within and why they could suddenly become important.
Alleria Windrunner
Alleria is one of the three Windrunner sisters and was a high-ranking ranger of the High Elves during the time of Warcraft II. She was also part of the expeditionary force that ventured into Draenor to stop the Orcs in their homeland.
For a long time, she was believed to be dead or at least lost, but she reappeared with the expansion Legion. She and her partner Turalyon fought alongside the Army of the Light against the Legion for several centuries – time flows differently in the Nether.
During the final confrontation on Argus with the Legion, Alleria had to make a difficult decision. She absorbed the energy of the dying Naaru L’ura and became the first Void Elf.
Later, when some Sin’dorei were transformed into Ren’dorei due to their research on Void magic, she took care of this group and thus practically became the leader of the Void Elves.
Like all Void Elves, Alleria constantly hears whispering voices of the Void – from the Old Gods, but also other beings of the Void, like Xal’atath.
Xal’atath constantly mocks Alleria and tries to drive her insane in order to make her her servant. So far, Alleria resists and has a strong drive to keep Xal’atath in check.
Whether she will succeed in this, we will surely find out in The War Within.
Dagran Thaurissan II.
Some may be surprised now, as most players have probably heard little about Dagran Thaurissan II. However, his story began back in Vanilla – so WoW-Classic.

Moira Bronzebeard was captured and taken by the Dark Iron Dwarf Dagran Thaurissan back then. That’s why the heroes had to venture into the Blackrock Depths to rescue Moira.
However, it soon turned out: Moira was not kidnapped at all, but willingly and out of love was with Dagran Thaurissan. Although Thaurissan was slain by the heroes, Moira was pregnant by him.
Some time later, her son was born and in memory of his deceased father, she named him “Dagran Thaurissan II.”
Since then, Dagran has only been mentioned in books or various short stories, and he hasn’t had a significant appearance in the game itself. However, this will change with The War Within.
What is even more important: Dagran is the legitimate heir to the throne of the dwarves. Even though Ironforge is currently led by the Council of Three Hammers, it is only a temporary solution. For as soon as Dagran reaches adulthood, the council will be dissolved and he will take over the leadership of the Dwarven kingdom.
Since he is already shown as a well-developed teenager in The War Within and has received his own model, it will only be a matter of short time until the dwarves of Ironforge must swear loyalty to their new king. In the meantime, he should be around 16 or 17 years old – depending on how much time has passed between Dragonflight and The War Within.
The plan of his mother Moira has seemingly worked completely.
