What is the current situation regarding the Vanilla servers for World of Warcraft? At least currently, Blizzard has nothing to announce on this.
Actually, the meeting between Blizzard and Nostalrius, the operators of the unofficial Classic servers of WoW, went quite well some time ago. But then it went quiet. Blizzard had to shut down the servers earlier this year for legal reasons, which led to an outcry in the community. Blizzard stated that they were considering how to implement “Legacy” servers, but so far no plans have been revealed.
Blizzard is currently not working on Vanilla servers for WoW
The Nostalrius team announced through the official forum that Blizzcon would be the perfect time for Blizzard to announce Vanilla servers for World of Warcraft. And if that doesn’t happen, they will do it themselves. Because the only thing that should matter is satisfying the community. Many fans saw this as a hint that Blizzard would announce something in that direction at Blizzcon. But the denial followed immediately.
Blizzard’s Executive Producer J. Allen Brack stated in the official WoW forum that there would be no announcement regarding “Legacy” servers for the MMORPG at Blizzcon. They are still internally reviewing the possibilities of how to implement something like this, but currently, they cannot say anything new about it. They have focused on the development and release of Update 7.1 over the past few months. At Blizzcon, they will focus on telling fans how they plan to expand WoW in the near future with new updates to continue the story that began with Legion.
They are already looking forward to telling the World of Warcraft fans what they can expect after Legion. As for Vanilla servers, fans will simply have to be patient.
