World of Warcraft is working on new ideas to strengthen the community. Those who are nice and friendly will receive rewards.
In recent years, World of Warcraft has taken new paths in many areas. This began in Dragonflight with a complete overhaul of the entire progression system and has now even led to the introduction of housing after two decades of waiting.
But for the developers, it is far from over. A new “Social” initiative is intended to reward players who behave kindly and nicely.
What was announced? Before Holly Longdale from Blizzard yesterday talked at length and in detail about many features and ideas of housing, she took a look at the general development of World of Warcraft and where the journey should go in the coming years. She stated that a new initiative focused on “Social” has been started within the development team. This initiative is particularly important to the development team and has a similar significant focus as “Housing” or “Expansions”.
What is the goal of this initiative? Blizzard recognizes social interactions as one of the cornerstones of World of Warcraft, which keeps the game attractive and unique even after over 20 years.
The [Social initiative] stands alongside other initiatives (like expansions or housing) and aims to provide solutions and features – such as, for example, rewards for positive behavior, easier ways to connect with like-minded individuals, roleplay
, and more. As a specific example, we are currently looking at improvements on how we can better link In-Game friends, the group finder, and better integration of the usual external social platforms that we know the community regularly uses. The team is working on several projects here, which we hope to be able to share more about over the course of the next year.
What kind of rewards could this be? Although Blizzard has not provided any concrete details here yet, the community has already generated many ideas on how to reward friendly and courteous fellow players.
One method could be a rating system, similar to what is used in Overwatch 2. Those who behave kindly and positively can receive positive ratings from other characters, and those who achieve a high rating receive small rewards at regular intervals. What in Overwatch 2 are additional Battle Pass XP could be small amounts of vendor currency in WoW.
However, it will likely be some time before there is clarity here. For by the time we see the first results of this new initiative, the next expansion “Midnight” will probably be ready to launch – which is likely to happen in early 2026.
Cortyn says: I really like the announcement of doing a little more for roleplaying fans – even though the last expansions for role players have already been quite well received and introduced many new, meaningful features. Numerous new toys with uses in RP, such as the large tents or weather machines have made roleplay more versatile and immersive. I think it’s absolutely great that these were not isolated cases, but part of ongoing, consistent efforts. There is surely a lot to look forward to in the coming years – aside from the promising housing.
