With the upcoming expansion World of Warcraft: Legion, the current PvP Honor system will be completely redesigned. They aim to not only eliminate the PvP armor but also introduce entirely new PvP talents and generate motivation through cosmetic upgrades – will they succeed?
Replacing the Honor System
The honor system as currently used in World of Warcraft will disappear. It will be replaced by a new leveling system that allows you to improve your PvP abilities. Honor points will thus fill a progress bar just like experience points. Depending on your new “PvP Level”, you will receive new talent points that you can freely distribute to new abilities. These abilities will explicitly only work in PvP and will have no relevance in PvE!
50 Levels – and then?
Those who have reached PvP Level 50 can actually lean back because their base power will not increase any further. All talents and benefits will have been unlocked by then. But it wouldn’t be an MMORPG if the game were over at that point, right? Those who wish can “get promoted” and reset their PvP Level back to 1. This means that while you will lose the previously learned PvP talents, you will gain access to some cosmetic upgrades. Certain mounts can only be obtained if you have reset a few times, and your character portrait will become more impressive the more often you go through this procedure. The team has planned further incentives, such as additional loot, gold, and exclusive artifact skins, to keep long-term PvP players engaged and reward them accordingly.
Disappearance of PvP Equipment
According to current statements, there will be no pure PvP equipment with Legion! This would imply that the strongest equipment in PvE exists, but this has also been denied up to now. Generally, the attribute differences in PvP are to be minimized. Currently, a character with full high-end PvP equipment is twice as strong as one wearing beginner PvP armor. They want to shrink these gigantic advantages and give an example: A character with high-end raid equipment should be only about 7% stronger in PvP than someone who has just reached maximum level. This should mainly happen through a sophisticated adjustment system of character attributes that raises weaker armor and lowers better gear to a normal level – small advantages will still be granted by good armor.
