World of Warcraft: Legion launched tonight and just before midnight, many players sat anxiously in front of the screen, secretly expecting the worst. Because so far, the launch of an MMO or MMO expansion has never gone smoothly. But with Legion, it was different!
Even before the Legion launch, Game Director Tom Chilton assured at Gamescom 2016 that everything would go perfectly this time. Many players still remembered the frustration that had occurred during the launch of Warlords of Draenor. A DDoS attack had crippled the servers, and millions of players couldn’t log in or waited endlessly in the queue. To that were added numerous “regular” problems, like lags and phasing issues. No one wanted to experience such a thing again.

But then everything turned out differently and quietly, Legion was suddenly there. Just moments before, we were doing our usual quests, and suddenly it went “whoosh” and we could embark on an adventure with Khadgar to Dalaran and to the Broken Isles, acquire our Artifact Weapon, and unlock the class hall of our class.
Everything went so smoothly that it almost seemed as if these new features had always existed and we just hadn’t noticed them before. There were no lags, no downtime, no server restarts, nothing. Everything ran like clockwork! But wait, really everything?
There’s always something!
Well, it didn’t go perfectly after all, and while everything went smoothly for me and our WoW demon Cortyn, other players did encounter one or another problem, for example:
- Phasing issues: Some players found that the area didn’t load in the correct phase, which left them standing awkwardly in an empty space while an intense battle should be raging. However, restarting the respective quest can easily fix the issue.
- Hey man, where is Dalaran? Some players also complain that despite completing the pre-quest, they cannot access Dalaran, and thus cannot start Legion. For some, the error resolved itself after one (or several) restarts, while others are still waiting to start the expansion.
By the way, it’s not a bug but intentional: If you haven’t done the pre-quests for Legion with any hero yet, you need to catch up on those first. Otherwise, you will never get to the Broken Isles! By the way, don’t miss our thematic collection on Legion!
Mein-MMO says: Kudos to Blizzard, that was a successful launch! And as we have learned from the previous expansion or other games, such smooth starts are anything but guaranteed. Wildstar was, for example, hardly playable for hours back then, and The Elder Scrolls Online had plenty of issues at launch and for weeks afterward. In contrast, the launch of Legion went really exemplary. The few players who are currently experiencing issues hopefully receive similarly competent and quick support from Blizzard, so that in the end, everyone can have fun and joy with Legion.
