The fantasy MMORPG World of Warcraft (WoW) still relies on a classic tab-targeting system, while newer games incorporate more action elements. Does Blizzard envision a change in the combat system?
WoW is over 10 years old, back then the “classic” tab-target system was the benchmark; you select enemies or find them with the “Tab” key, then they are selected as enemies and you unleash abilities with hotkeys that specifically target that enemy – aiming is not necessary. The enemy, in turn, targets you and their abilities hit automatically.
Meanwhile, newer MMORPGs focus on an “action combat system,” where they simply hit what is in front of them and dynamically evade attacks. Is WoW planning a switch to the new system?

In an interview, the developers of World of Warcraft indicated that they are planning, to refine the combat system in WoW. It should feel better, focusing particularly on the animations, to give players a “better” feel and make combat more responsive.
In WoW you will never need the reflexes of a 13-year-old
However, an action combat system is viewed skeptically. It is believed that it wouldn’t appeal to such a wide audience as WoW has. There is certainly a player base that enjoys very intense combat, like a Street Fighter audience. However, it is doubted that it would resonate with their broadly targeted audience. They will ensure that in WoW, players won’t need the reflexes of a 13-year-old to master opponents or other players.
They want to ensure that when encountering other players or mobs, one does not need the reflexes of a thirteen-year-old. If they ever chose to make the combat system more tactile, they would consider the broad range of age, experience, and capability of their players.
