Currently, a problem is spreading in World of Warcraft that is taking the gold from honest players.
Fraudster “takes over” the interface in World of Warcraft
It sounds like a bad joke, but it is not. Currently, a “interface virus” is spreading rapidly in World of Warcraft, which causes you to hand over your saved gold directly to a fraudster and encourages your friends to do the same. But one thing at a time.
What happened?
A user on Reddit pointed out that a player in the general channel claimed he would sell a complete run of the Hellfire Citadel. However, potential buyers must execute a “/run” command beforehand, which supposedly ensures that the Raider’s interface does not get messed up.
However, the command does something completely different. It allows the other player to whisper you additional commands that are automatically accepted by your interface. In plain text, this means: The fraudster can access all the functions of your user interface and do anything that addons could normally accomplish.
One consequence of this is that the fraudster can trade with you and you then automatically place all your gold in the trading window. But it doesn’t stop there. Once you are “infected”, the fraudster will send messages through your interface to all friends and guildmates prompting them to execute this command as well. This creates a chain reaction, and the fraudster simply has to walk through the cities with open hands and collect the gold from his victims.
How can you protect yourself?
The good old principle applies: If you don’t know what a command does, don’t use it. So refrain from using any “/run” or “script” commands in the near future until this incident is over.
