The raid guild APES achieved the first World-First kills in WoW Classic against Ragnaros and Onyxia in September 2019. But now the guild is disbanding. The leader of the guild, Twitch streamer Maitoz, has harsh criticism for WoW Classic. He says it has become a money factory for boosters and has nothing to do with the original WoW.
Here are the guild’s accomplishments:
- The guild APES played on the EU server “Gehennas” in WoW Classic. It is an Alliance guild. The astonishing thing was that the guild only needed 6 days to kill Ragnaros and Onyxia as the worldwide first in WoW Classic. When they gathered the first kills, APES didn’t even have 40 players at max level.
- The first kill of Ragnaros was achieved in the first week after the release of WoW Classic with 15 out of 40 players under level 60. Ragnaros fell on the first attempt. It was crucial that the tank was well equipped enough to actually tank Ragnaros.
- The World-First on Onyxia was secured by the guild with only 34 fighters. More could not be brought into the raid because only 34 had completed the pre-quest for Onyxia. Onyxia turned out to be a bit harder than Ragnaros, the dragon was killed only on the second attempt.
“Enough is enough”
This is why the guild is now disbanding: In a Twitch stream, the leader of the guild Maitoz says he will quit WoW and his guild will dissolve:
“I have been thinking about quitting for a long time. The game is simply not what I and most of my guild are looking for. You continue playing out of loyalty and friendship, but that can’t go on forever. I have been playing this game for 15 years, my entire adult life: Enough is enough.”

WoW Classic has become an industry – in the bad sense
Maitoz says,
- he does not believe that Tier 5 (Lady Vashj, Kael’Thas) would magically make WoW Classic better now.
- in hindsight, he should have quit after six months with WoW Classic. He thinks Classic died after the Blackwing Lair. That was when it stopped being “WoW Classic” and became a “money factory for boosters”.
- people would teleport to raids. The feeling of “WoW Classic” has died; the game now feels bad like an industry.
However, it seems to be the feeling that predominates: He has played enough WoW in his life.
What does he mean by boosters? Some criticize: WoW Classic is now being played completely differently than the actual WoW from 2004 (via wow forum).
Nowadays, it is hardly possible to find “normal leveling groups”; instead, high-level mages offer to pull players through dungeons to help them quickly reach the max level. They gather the enemies and “bomb” them away with their abilities.
Depending on how many enemies fall (and thereby experience points are gained), they demand gold. The gold they earn this way can then be sold for real money – even if that is not allowed.
Spaces in successful and well-established raid groups also seem to be sold in WoW Classic.
For veterans like Maitoz, who have been playing WoW forever, this seems to be a point that is heavily criticized about WoW Classic.
The feeling “enough is enough” seems to be what many currently have about WoW:
