XDefiant was supposed to be the major competitor to Call of Duty and was actually scheduled for release last year. As of today, the Free2Play title has not been released, and the release is still pending. What is the current status of XDefiant?
What is XDefiant?
- The first announcement of XDefiant was actually in 2021
- Last year, many players had their first opportunity to play the Free2Play shooter in the form of an open beta
- The beta was well received, and MeinMMO author Dariusz Müller also found that the shooter is a good alternative to CoD
- However, after the beta, things went quiet around XDefiant
The game was originally supposed to be released in September 2023, but was then postponed to October. However, even by this rough release date, the shooter did not appear, and now the question arises as to how XDefiant is doing currently and whether a soon release can be expected.

The development is in limbo
To this day, there is no concrete release date for the game. In a financial report from Ubisoft , XDefiant was listed among releases between January and March 2024. Since we have had no news on this to date, it indicates that there will be no spontaneous release even in the last week of March.
Tom Henderson from Insider Gaming was able to speak with anonymous developers of the game, thereby obtaining new information about the game. The last known release date for XDefiant was, according to them, at the end of February.
According to Henderson, XDefiant has not been able to reach many internal milestones during its development. A major problem is the competition. XDefiant is said to be chasing Call of Duty too closely and trying to copy it. As a result, it is not developing into its own game. The current build of the game is constantly breaking because they want to add something from CoD.
According to Henderson’s sources, this is the reason for the constant delays.
According to Insider Gaming sources, there is currently no concrete release date internally either. The game is currently in limbo. However, they are apparently planning open playtests that are currently taking place in closed settings. Reports indicate that there is no need to worry that the game has been canceled for now.
