The latest patch in Overwatch has buffed some heroes. Two of them are now so strong together that they can cause significant problems for their opponents.
Which heroes are we talking about? Baptiste and McCree. The combination of these two heroes currently has immense firepower. This is due to their buffs in the patch from June 18, 2019:
- McCree’s shots now have a cooldown of 0.42 seconds, instead of 0.5 as before
- Baptiste’s ultimate ability “Amplification Matrix” now lasts 2 seconds longer (10 seconds total)
Once again, McCree has received a buff that brings him into the spotlight. Back in March, there was a PTR patch that made his Ultimate so strong that he could kill players behind full shields.
What makes them so strong together? The current combination of these two heroes is so powerful because McCree can fire more shots through the Amplification Matrix due to the adjustment.
The faster rate of fire alone already results in a significantly greater damage output. It had previously been tested on the PTR in May with a reduction to 0.4 seconds. Even then, there was already talk of McCree’s strength.
Because Baptiste now also maintains his Matrix longer, McCree can fire more amplified shots. Especially in situations where dodging is hardly possible, this is deadly for opponents. A short clip demonstrates this:
How to avoid the Death Combo
What can I do against it? The easiest way to avoid the hail of bullets is to wait. Just wait until the Matrix has expired and only attack again after the ten seconds. Use the time to regroup.
Alternatively, you can avoid the areas that the Matrix and McCree can effectively cover. Avoid these areas if possible, or just wait it out.
In the community, there is the opinion that this new buff is intended to make Baptiste’s ultimate finally taken seriously. Previously, it was often ignored by opponents, even though it meant their defeat. Now, it poses a more obvious threat.
A different threat, and a much larger one at the moment, is a hamster:
