DOOM Eternal offers some interesting features that should keep you engaged with the game for a long time – both in the endgame and on the way there. We present to you three of the contents that the new shooter wants to keep you entertained with.
What are these features? The features are in-game contents that serve various functions:
- The Fortress of DOOM ensures your progress while playing.
- Master Levels provide you with tougher, repeatable missions.
- The Battlemode offers multiplayer and varied PvP.
Each of these features ensures that you always have something to do. We will explain to you exactly how they work.
Fortress of DOOM – The Player Progression
What is the Fortress of DOOM? The Fortress is a space fortress above the Earth, to which the Doomslayer returns after each mission. The Fortress can be expanded and serves as a hub for just about every activity.
From there, you start new missions and equip the Doomslayer with new abilities. If you collect enough cores, you will unlock more areas of the Fortress or new weapons, skills (like the Ice Grenade), and skins.

Not all functions and secrets of the Fortress are known yet, but you will surely spend a large part of your time here, so you will definitely figure out a lot on your own.
This is how the Fortress provides long-term motivation: In some videos featuring gameplay scenes, you can see what the Fortress has to offer. It is not only massive but also contains several features that can keep you entertained:
- The RIPatorium – A prison as a training center where you can test new weapons, equipment, and abilities.
- Picture frames – Search the world for records to display them in the Fortress. When you use them, the corresponding track will play in the Fortress – presumably harder music than in the TV spot.
- The “Mancave” of the Doomslayer – Here, the Doomslayer displays replicas of collected weapons and killed enemies, collects books, guitars, and comics, and even has a PC set up. On this PC, you can play a secret game if you find enough floppy disks.
IGN took a tour of the Fortress with the developers. We have embedded the video for you here:
By the way: You won’t only receive upgrades in the Fortress of DOOM. The Praetorian armor can also be improved via tokens that you find along the way. The same goes for weapons, which you can equip with new perks.
You also receive upgrade materials for the Doomslayer himself, with which you can acquire new abilities and runes that grant you special moves.

Master Levels – Challenges for Perfectionists
What are Master Levels? Master Levels are somewhat like the “New Game +” of DOOM Eternal. They allow you to replay already completed levels, but with tougher and sometimes even new enemies.
The levels generally run exactly the same as the first time, but are filled with stronger demons like more Pain Elementals, Mancubi, Revenants, and more. It is not just about having more enemies; they are also positioned in a way that requires you to devise tactics and strategies.
You should already have a good understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of your equipment before you start.
IGN has released a nine-minute video featuring gameplay of the Master Levels. This will give you a better idea of what it’s like:
This is how the Master Levels provide long-term motivation: Master Levels are not just a new difficulty, but are generally harder. You can also spice them up or tone them down with the chosen difficulty level.
This serves to train your skills as a Doomslayer to the fullest and to bring out every bit of your character. You learn here how to best fight opponents, what weaknesses they have, and how to use your abilities in combination.
In doing so, you not only train your skills against the NPC demons, but you may also learn a few tricks for PvP.
Battlemode instead of Deathmatch – The Multiplayer of DOOM Eternal
What is the Battlemode? The Battlemode is the alternative to the popular multiplayer of the DOOM series, which has so far been known for its fast-paced and brutal deathmatches. The Battlemode, however, offers a completely new approach.
You play in a round an asymmetric match of two demons against a fully equipped Doomslayer. The Doomslayer has access to all equipment, including the BFG, as long as he survives.
The demons have special skills that they can use, and minions that they can summon. They fight together against the Doomslayer, and he must kill both within a certain time to win. Otherwise, the defeated one will be revived and the game continues.
Here, too, IGN has a video showcasing 12 minutes of gameplay of the Battlemode:
This is how the Battlemode provides long-term motivation: Since this is the PvP feature, the competitive mentality is the driving force. The Battlemode challenges both sides:
- Doomslayers have to prove they are stronger than the combined power of two other players.
- Demons have to kill a fully equipped badass who slaughters entire armies of demons single-handedly.
Especially interesting is that players can take on the perspective of the “bad guys.” There are different classes of demons, each with special abilities that can complement each other.
This ensures that every match can play out differently, and even if a “meta” should crystallize, a player with an “off-meta” demon could be so strong that he really challenges experienced Doomslayers. Here, finesse and practice are required.
What additional content is coming to DOOM Eternal
What is still planned? DOOM Eternal is set to receive content like an MMO, so it will be constantly expanded. The developers have not revealed a concrete plan yet, but DOOM Eternal will likely be a service game.
In the game itself, there is already a free system that looks like a battle pass, which rewards you with cosmetics for leveling up. It is quite possible that the system will be expanded to introduce seasons for the Battlemode, for even more content.
DOOM Eternal is also full of story that players can discover if they want. The developers have already revealed that pretty much every element of the environment, especially in the Fortress, has a story and is meant to provoke thought.
You can also find individual parts of the story while playing. If you want to read them, you can learn more about the background. But how much do you already know about DOOM Eternal? Let us know in the survey:
