Music and other audiovisual elements
Background music makes a significant difference in the mood of a story. It’s no wonder that there are legendary soundtracks from movies and video games that fans want to attend concerts for.
Music can clarify emotions, create a calm, exciting, or creepy atmosphere, and also tell its own story.
There are plenty of playlists on YouTube and other music streaming services that are perfect for various scenarios in your campaign. Those willing to take the extra step can create personal playlists for different scenes or characters that can be used at appropriate times.
How effective the change of music can be is clearly illustrated in this clip from the streaming group Bards of New York:
Personal tip from Caro: In our D&D group, but also in the groups of other colleagues from the editorial team, the free app Pocket Bard is very popular. If you cannot find the right song directly or generally prefer ambience sounds over music, the app is a great alternative.
It plays background noises from various locations, offers exploration, combat, and victory variations, different weather conditions, and a soundboard for various actions like spells, weapon attacks, explosions, and more.
