The new Workshop is already bearing fruit in Overwatch. Blizzard has even implemented a test version of “Battle Royale.”
This morning, we reported that Blizzard wants to implement a new feature called “Workshop” in Overwatch. The feature is already on the PTR and allows players to create their own game modes and variations of heroes.
The first fruits of that can already be admired – including a “Battle Royale” mode. It was even already part of the preset variants.
This is how Battle Royale looks in Overwatch: In Blizzard’s Workshop, the mode is called “Fire Dome” and is played on the “Capture Point” maps. All players appear at different points within the map and fight against each other in classic “Team Deathmatch” style. The respawns are clearly a difference from typical BR matches.
As time progresses, the dome over the map shrinks more and more until it ultimately disappears completely.
This YouTuber shows how it looks in action:
Battle Royale with many bugs: However, the “Fire Dome” also has some disadvantages and bugs that simply haven’t been fixed yet. When someone dies, they probably respawn at a location that is already outside the dome and immediately catch fire.
In a BR mode, there should actually be a permadeath. If you die, you’re out. That would still need to be improved.
The fact that the dome completely disappears should also not be intended. Here, players must improve and experiment until the game settings meet what fans desire.
Since the maps can’t be changed in size, a “proper” Battle Royale with multiple square kilometers of area will probably not be possible.
More crazy modes in development: The community is already busy creating more crazy game modes. For example, there is “Silver Surfer Mei” – here Mei has been modified on a map so that she can run faster when she freezes the ground right in front of her feet. This allows her to slide across the map like in turbo mode.
If you want to try out the Workshop yourself, you need to download the PTR of Overwatch on PC. Once the patch goes live, the Workshop will also be available on Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
What do you think of the Workshop and its modes so far? Does Overwatch still need a Battle Royale? Or should we better stay away from that?
